Sports betting has been legal in Manitoba for nearly 40 years, dating back to Sport Select’s arrival via the Western Canadian Lottery Corporation (WCLC). The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation (MBLL) operates PlayNow.com, which is Manitoba’s lone provincially regulated single-game betting option. 1970
Manitoba becomes one of the first provinces to conduct lotteries after the Manitoba Centennial Lottery Act is passed. The Act, which supported Manitoba’s 100th anniversary, came one year after amendments to the Canadian Criminal Code gave provinces the authority to operate lotteries and casinos.
1989
Sports betting comes to Manitoba with the introduction of Sport Select. Run by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Sport Select features fixed-odds betting on the moneyline, point spread and over/under in various sports. However, since single-game betting was still illegal under the Canadian Criminal Code, Sport Select required players to combine (parlay) all of their selections on one ticket and get all of their selections right to win. Bettors are also required to purchase their Sport Select tickets in person at select retailers.
2013
PlayNow.com, an online gambling portal owned and operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, expands to Manitoba via partnership with the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation. The addition of PlayNow enables Manitoba residents to place sports bets online and take advantage of live betting options.
2021
Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, makes it possible for provinces to offer single-game sports betting. Soon after the bill is passed, Sport Select introduces single-game betting and also adds futures betting.

Based out of Winnipeg, the MBLL is a crown agency of the Manitoba government whose oversight includes Western Canada Lottery Corporation products sold via ticket retailers, two Casinos of Winnipeg properties, the PlayNow.com online sports betting portal and video lottery terminals (VLTs) throughout the province.
All gambling products run by the MBLL are regulated by the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba, which licenses charitable gaming activities, ensures technical integrity of games and equipment, monitors compliance and more.
