Stanley Cup Odds Movement

With every passing week there's significant movement on the 2024-25 NHL Stanley Cup odds board, so let's break down the teams that have seen the biggest rise and fall on the odds board.

Riser: Ottawa Senators

The Senators patience with Linus Ullmark seems to be paying off, the Sens big offseason acquisition from Boston has turned the corner on a rocky season averaging an outstanding 0.956 save percentage and a 1.36 goals against average in his last eight games.

That's allowed the Sens to hold an 7-0-1 in those eight games and push into an important playoff position.

Ottawa has a long way to go to prove its a Stanley Cup contenders, but there's no doubt it has tons of talent. Captain Brady Tkachuk and wingers Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson are all playing above a point per game, depth piece Adam Gaudette is playing to a 36 goal pace while Jake Sanderson and Thomas Chabot are high functioning top-pair defenders.

Add all of that to a Linus Ullmark who's playing like he was in 22-23 when he won the Vezina and Ottawa looks like a solid dark horse going forward.

Faller: New York Rangers

Technically, the Buffalo Sabres are the biggest fallers since the last update with their odds dropping from +8000 to +10000, but who needs to talk about the tire fire in upstate New York? How about we talk about the tire fire in downtown New York!

The Rangers, who started the season with +1000 odds to win the Cup now sit at +1700 which isn't a big enough drop considering the mess at MSG.

Since November 21st, the Rangers have gone 3-11SU and been outscored 31-52 in the process. That poor record has seen them drop out of hte playoff race, three points back of the Ottawa Senators.

Artemi Panarin is productive with 12 points in 12 games since the slide began, but he's now sidelined day to day. But former 30 goals scored Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider are shadows of their former selves combining for three goals in those 12 games. And then we hear that there was a players-only meeting where the players communicated their displesure with GM Chris Drury.

As of the time of writing, Drury is still in the GM's chair with his team in a three game losing streak and getting shutout by the Nashville Predators who are deadlast in the NHL. An embarrassing situation is only getting worse in New York and it's not going to get better if Drury stays.

2024-25 Stanley Cup Odds Best Value Bet: Minnesota Wild, +1700

Minni is near the top of the league with an 20-7-4 record and going 7-3-0 in its last 10 games, you can attribute that strong record to having the hottest goalie in the league in Filip Gustavsson - who is currently injured but should be back shortly - as well as the best player in the league right now in Kirill Kaprizov who's scored a near league-high 47 points; Kirill is also an excellent Hart Trophycandidate.

On a team level, the Wild have the best defensive record allowing only 2.52 goals per game and as the adage goes, defense wins championships. Minnesota is playing the best hockey and has the two best players, in their respective positions, it has everything needed to win a Cup.

2018Washington Capitals+1125
2017Pittsburgh Penguins+1100
2016Pittsburgh Penguins+1300
2015Chicago Blackhawks+700

Over the past 10 years, the average opening odds for the eventual Stanley Cup champions are +1320. So don't always bet on the chalk.

The Blues are the big exception with +3000 before the ’18-19 season began, netting early bettors $3,000 on a $100 bet, but it gets better! By the All-Star break that year, the Blues were at the bottom of the NHL standings – their odds of winning the Stanley Cup were +10000. That means a $100 bet would have returned a whopping $10,000 in profits. Wild.

Toronto sure has a lot of Cups, but they haven't won or even been to a Stanley Cup Final since that last championship back in 1967. Breaking their drought of first-round exits in the 2023 playoffs, let’s pray for Leafs fans that their squad can get to the finals soon.

However, with modern parity in the NHL, it will be long before any franchise passes the Montreal Canadiens' 24 Stanley Cup banners, which they racked up over multiple decades in the mid-1900s.

NHL Teams That Have Never Won A Stanley Cup

With Florida's championship in 2024, there are now only 10 teams who haven't won a Cup. But that's still under a third of the league, who have yet to put their hands on the Stanley Cup.

Most of the teams on this list have come close. All but Arizona, Columbus, Minnesota, Seattle and Winnipeg have at least appeared in a Stanley Cup Final.

Technically the Ottawa Senators did win a few Stanley Cups, but that last championship took place before the invention of penicillin, not to mention the Senators didn't exist between 1934 (when they moved to St. Louis) and 1992. So, I'm not going to count those. Sorry Sens fans!

Stanley Cup Betting Odds and Trends

As hockey bettors, we're always hunting for an edge or trends that make our wagers a little easier on the mind -- when it comes to the Stanley Cup, there are a few notable patterns we can pick up on. The trophy is still anyone's game, but here are a few common trends over the last few years that could help you narrow down a pick:

  • When it comes to picking a favored conference, it’s pretty split – out of the last 10 winners, 60% have been Eastern teams and the West claims 40%.
  • The Cup is a repeat-friendly trophy. The Penguins and Lightning have both gone back-to-back in the last 10 years, and 16 teams total have had repeat victories since 1918.
  • You’d think regular season domination would indicate a Stanley Cup favorite, but the President’s Trophy has only gone to the eventual winner of the finals eight times in its 35-year lifespan. Take a look at the 2023 Bruins – the best record in NHL history with a first-round exit. Yikes.

What Are Stanley Cup Futures

A futures bet is betting on the outcome of an event before it takes place – when it comes to the Stanley Cup, that means betting on who will hoist the league's top trophy well before it's awarded.

It’s simple on paper, but the wealth of options can make it tricky. Don’t worry if you’re risk-averse though. Odds are available well right up to the final game of the playoffs.
