essential NBA Betting Tips and information
The NBA is a blast to bet on thanks to star power from names like Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jayson Tatum. The Association has changed a lot over the years and virtually every game feels like an offensive slugfest which makes same-game parlays and player props highly entertaining. The NBA is known for heart-pumping action with buzzer beaters, overtime thrillers, and lots of 3-point buckets. Below are popular bet types and helpful tips on wagering throughout the NBA season.
popular bet types
moneyline
This is simply a bet on which team will win the game. If you bet the Bulls on the moneyline and they win, your bet wins. If the Bulls lose, the bet loses. The margin of victory doesn’t matter for moneyline bets.
spreads
Point spreads are a popular way to bet on NBA games. If you take the Lakers as a favorite on a point-spread bet, they need to win the game by more than the point spread. For instance, if L.A. is a 4.5-point favorite and you bet them on the point spread, your bet will lose unless the Lakers win by 5+ points. A bet on the underdog with a 4.5-point spread means you can still win your bet if the underdog loses by 1-4 points (or, of course, if they win the game). A minus sign on a point spread indicates that team is a favorite, while a plus sign is associated with an underdog. If the point spread changes after you place your wager, your bet is still related to the spread at the time you submitted your wager.
total (over/Under)
This is a wager on the total number of points scored by both teams in the game (including overtime). For example, if the Thunder vs Magic total is 210 and the final score is 115-110, then OVER bettors would win (and UNDER bettors would lose) because the final score total was 215 (100+115). Which team wins is irrelevant.
first half (1H)
The moneyline, point spread, or totals can also be bet for the first half of a game.
player props
Player prop bets are wagers on a specific player’s performance during a game. For instance, Jayson Tatum O/U 27.5 points or Nikola Vucevic O/U 8.5 rebounds. It’s common to see player props available for assists, steals or combos (e.g. points+assists) too. Other examples of player props include: Who will score the game’s first basket, will a player hit 4+ 3-pointers, or will a certain player get a triple double.
parlays
A parlay allows you to combine multiple bets into one larger wager. If they all win, it pays handsomely, but if even one game loses, the entire bet loses. For instance, you could bet the Knicks moneyline, Pacers -4.5 point spread, and Cavs +3.5, but if the Cavaliers and Pacers cover their spreads, you’ll still lose if the Knicks lose their game.
same game parlays
The NBA is one of the best sports for same game parlays because of the wide selection of player props to choose from. An example of a 3-leg same game parlay would be Cam Johnson O21.5 points, Nic Claxton O7.5 rebounds, and Ben Simmons O7.5 assists. Despite the “Same Game” title, some sportsbooks allow bettors to combine bets like this from different games as well.
NBA Betting Strategies
always shop around
Each sportsbook offers its own vigorish and lines for the same games so compare prices. For instance, the Warriors’ point spread might be -9 at one sportsbook and -8.5 at another. Even if the point spread is the same, the vigorish might be different (e.g. -110 vs. -108) meaning you can wager less at one sportsbook to win the same amount. Over time, these differences matter, so it’s in your best interests to have multiple sportsbooks and shop around for the best price on each wager you make.
beware of load management
There’s nothing worse than submitting a bet only to learn that a star player on the team you bet will be sitting out. It used to be rare for non-injured NBA players to take games off and now it happens all the time. I recommend following NBA beat writers on social media platforms like X so you can get the latest NBA news to inform your wagers.
building logical SGPs
Think about how realistic potential game scripts are when you’re building Same Game Parlays. For instance, if you’re betting for one player on a team to score 50+ points then it’s not realistic to have another player on the same team also scoring 50+ points, because the chances of that happening are low since one of those things happening makes it less likely the other will happen. In general, there will be more assists in higher scoring games and more rebounds when shots aren’t falling.
be wary of teasers
Because basketball games are higher scoring than football games, getting a handful of points on teasers isn’t as helpful on the hardwood. Teasing totals in NBA games isn’t recommended and teasing point spreads is generally not an effective long-term strategy either.
live betting
Always consider which players are in foul trouble when live betting. Live betting, or “in-game betting,” can be used to correct a bad wager made before the game if things are going poorly in the first half, but this type of betting isn’t recommended for newcomers because it involves split-second decisions and the vigorish is often higher while live betting, meaning your wagers cost more to make. Don’t dabble in live betting, until you’re fully comfortable with traditional betting.
overtime kills unders
If you’re betting a game UNDER and regulation ends with a tie score that totals less than the under, you’re not out of the woods yet. Overtime points count toward the total, so if you’re live betting the total or sweating out a pre-flop bet, that’s an important piece of information.
