top betting sites for the nHL
There are a lot of ways to bet on the NHL, and using multiple sportsbooks helps to maximize the types of wagers available to you. Even when sportsbooks have the same offerings, the prices (or vigorish) can vary. For instance, the Rangers moneyline might be -130 at one sportsbook, while it’s -140 at another. By shopping around and getting the best number on each wager, you’ll be more likely to win in the long run. BetMGM, FanDuel, Bet365, and Caesars are some of the most trusted legal sportsbooks for wagering on NHL games, but each one offers a slightly different experience. Keep reading to see the strengths and weaknesses of each of these sportsbooks from the first game of the season all the way to the presentation of the Conn Smythe Trophy.

Essential NHL Betting Tips and information
NHL betting is highly entertaining and a lot of fun, but it’s a lot different than betting on other sports so keep reading for some helpful tips to know before placing your next wager. Whether it’s the Stanley Cup Finals or a random regular season game in November, NHL games pack more drama than a daytime soap opera with fights, players crashing into the boards, and pucks clinking off the post.
popular bet types
moneyline
Moneylines are very popular for NHL bettors. A moneyline wager on the Maple Leafs simply means if Toronto wins the game, you win your bet. If Toronto loses the game, then Toronto moneyline bettors lose their wager.
3-way moneyline
Like with soccer, NHL bettors have the option of a 3-way moneyline which is a bet on which team wins the regulation period and in addition to those odds, “tie” is an option to bet as well.
puck line
Like point spreads in other sports, or the “run line” in MLB, the puck line refers to a margin of victory that a favorite must surpass in order to win the bet. Puck lines are typically set at -1.5 for every NHL game. If you’re taking the Bruins -1.5 on the puck line, then a one-goal Bruins win is a loss and a 2+ goal Bruins win would cash your bet. Underdogs on the +1.5 goal puck line can still win the bet even though their team lost the game by one goal.
totals (over/under)
This is a wager on the total number of goals scored by both teams in the game (including overtime). For instance, if the Oilers vs Wild total is 5.5 and the final score is 4-3, then OVER bettors would win (and UNDER bettors would lose) because the final score had 7 goals (4+3). It doesn’t matter which team wins the game.
prop bets and futures
Prop bets are wagers on specific outcomes during a game or season that can be related to a specific team or player. For instance player props can be placed on how many shots on goal Connor McDavid will have or which player will score the first goal of the game. Futures bets refer to bets placed on an event or result that takes place in the future like the Stanley Cup Finals or the Vezina Trophy winner.
NHL Betting Strategies
always shop around
Each sportsbook offers its own moneyline odds and totals for the same games so compare prices. For instance, if Edmonton’s moneyline is -138 at one sportsbook, they might be -145 at another shop. Of course, you’re better off betting the Oilers at -138 compared to -145, but you might not realize you have options if you don’t shop around. Over time these line differences matter, so it’s in your best interests to have multiple sportsbooks and shop around for the best price on each wager you make.
live betting
Live betting, or “in-game betting,” can be used to correct a bad wager made before the game if things are going poorly in the first period, but this type of betting isn’t recommended for newcomers because it involves split-second decisions and the vigorish is often higher while live betting, meaning your wagers cost more to make. Don’t dabble in live betting, until you’re fully comfortable with traditional betting.
watch travel schedules
NHL teams can wear down when they have unfavorable travel schedules so check and see how grueling a team’s recent schedule has been. If one team is playing on back-to-back nights while the other has three days rest, we can assume the well-rested team may play with more intensity.
know the goalies
There can be a big difference between a team’s starting goaltender and the backup. You don’t want to put a wager in with the assumption that the starter will be playing only to learn that the starter will be riding the bench. Make sure you have the latest starting goalie news before you place any bets on the moneyline, puck line, or total.
watch trends
Riding a hot player or team can be an effective way to win NHL wagers, but bettors shouldn’t rely entirely on trends. For instance, if a player has scored a goal in four straight games, he’s obviously playing with a lot of confidence and may score in the next game but if he’s now playing vs. a good defense with an elite goalie, you may want to think twice on his player props.
