2017 continues to be a banner year for the sport of boxing. And the year will deliver in a big way one more time when Vasyl Lomachenko takes on Guillermo Rigondeaux on December 9.
Lomachenko and Rigondeaux are two of the best pure boxers in the world with both winning two Olympic gold medals as amateurs before going pro. Lomachenko opened as a hefty -500 favorite with Rigondeaux coming back at +350 according to online book Sportsbook.
This betting line has less to do with skill and more to do with weight, as Rigondeaux is jumping up two weight classes to challenge for the WBO super featherweight title.
Though Lomachenko has only 10 fights in his pro career, he has already claimed gold and beaten some very good fighters. The Ukrainian has some phenomenal technique but he combines that with a power and thirst for the knockout like very few others in the game.
Rigondeaux is undefeated in his 18 professional fights, going 17-0 with one no contest. The Cuban is widely regarded as one of the best defensive boxers in the sport today. Though many have claimed that makes for a boring fight, his counterpunches are devastating and can give fits to opponents who like to push the pace.
This fight doesn’t have the same casual fan appeal as Mayweather vs McGregor or GGG vs Canelo, but Lomachenko vs Rigondeaux has the potential to be the most interesting fight of the year.
