Time Magazine's Person of the Year has held a certain amount of weight and prestige for quite some time. The magazine has been awarding the honor – formerly titled Man of the Year – since Charles Lindbergh was given the inaugural title in 1927.
Though we are literally more than half a year away from the issue hitting shelves, Hillary Clinton is a heavy -250 favorite to adorn the cover for 2016 per Sportsbook. Close behind Clinton is the presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump (+300).
The likely opponents for the upcoming presidential election are the safest bets, as the incoming president has won the award every year in which an American election has been held since George W. Bush in 2000. Almost every sitting president has won the award since its inception – with the exception of Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford.
If there is one ‘long shot’ to potentially back, it could be Migrants. Though the news story is slowly flaming out – and it will almost certainly be removed from the collective consciousness by the publication of the specific issue – there is no doubt that the first half of this year saw the news dominated by stories about Syrian refugees.
Of course, with such a massive amount of time between now and the naming of the Person of the Year there could be a non-listed person come soaring with a huge invention or a horrible sociopolitical decision that affects the world on a global stage.
