Triple Crown Sportsbook American Pharoah will be back in action on Saturday as the overwhelming odds favorite in the $1.6 million Travers (G1) at Saratoga. He is the current betting favorite at 1/5 at Sportsbook.
The Bob Baffert trainee returns just four weeks after his sharp score in the Haskell Invitational (G1) at Monmouth Park on August 2. Under regular jockey Victor Espinoza, the colt opened up a clear lead in the stretch and won under a hand ride by 2¼ lengths, his eighth consecutive victory.
American Pharoah is seeking to become just the second horse to win the Triple Crown and the Travers Stakes. Whirlaway in 1941 is the only horse to accomplish the feat.
The Triple Crown Sportsbook has not scared away the competition, as a field of nine will line up to face him on Saturday.
The current second choice in the early betting at Sportsbook is Frosted at 7/1. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the colt ran second in the Jim Dandy (G2) over the Saratoga main track in his last outing on Aug. 1.
The colt was fourth in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and second in the Belmont Stakes (G1) in his two previous starts. Joel Rosario has the ride.
The third choice in the betting at Sportsbook is Texas Red at 8/1. The colt won the Jim Dandy in his last outing for his first win since taking last fall’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) at Santa Anita. Foot issues this spring knocked him off the Triple Crown trail.
The colt is trained by Keith Desormeaux and will be ridden by his brother Kent.
Saturday’s Travers Day card features six Grade 1 races and four are Breeders’ Cup Challenge ‘Win and You’re In” races.
Handicapper Michael Dempsey will be providing his full card report for the entire Travers Day card at Saratoga at turfnsport.com.
