Predicting who will lead the NFL in rushing has needed incredible luck or some sort of crystal ball in recent memory. In the past three seasons, only two running backs have finished in the top five more than once – those being Adrian Peterson and LeSean McCoy.
We watched several running backs put on shocking displays last season as Todd Gurley and Doug Martin finished second and third in rushing despite neither Sportsbook the season with better odds than +6600 to pace the league.
However, it is Adrian Peterson’s consistent excellence that has him as the +333 favorite to rack up the most rushing yards in 2016. The biggest issue plaguing Peterson is injuries, as AP has only played in all 16 regular season games four times in his 10-year career – though he did average 1681 yards in those campaigns.
After finishing last year third in the NFL in rushing – despite only seeing major carries in 12 games – Gurley has the second-highest odds to lead the league in 2016. The LA Rams will be a run-first team thanks to Jeff Fisher’s scheme and the team breaking in Jared Goff at quarterback.
If there is one player who can replicate Gurley’s phenomenal rookie season, it is Ezekiel Elliott. The first-round draft pick has the build to immediately become a bell cow for the Cowboys and will be running behind one of the best offensive lines in football.
