Sportsbook Odds Analysis

The Mets opened as -200 favorites in this matchup with staff ace Jacob deGrom taking the mound, but early action has come in on the underdog Red Sox. New York is down to -176 while Boston is now a +166 underdog. The total has also moved slightly from its opener of 8 runs down to 7.5 runs.

Starting Pitchers Analysis

Jacob deGrom was masterful in his season debut last Friday, needing only 72 pitches to breeze through five scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets ace allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out eight in his last start and is showing no signs of rust due to the long offseason.

Nathan Eovaldi was also strong in his 2020 debut as he allowed only one run and struck out four in six innings against the Baltimore Orioles. The oft-injured Eovaldi will get a tougher test on Wednesday against this Mets lineup as he looks to stay healthy over an entire season for the first time since 2014.

Boston News & Notes

All systems appeared to be a go in Boston’s season opener as the Red Sox crushed the Orioles with a 13-2 win. But since then, the Red Sox have gone 0-4 and been outscored 29-13, giving up at least seven runs in all four losses and failing to score more than four runs in any of them.

An already suspect pitching staff and bullpen has been depleted by COVID-19 as starter Eduardo Rodriguez and relievers Josh Taylor and Darwinzon Hernandez are all out until they test negatively for the virus. But even with a fully healthy pitching staff, Boston is going to need its offense to outhit opponents if the Red Sox hope to enjoy success in 2020.

New York News & Notes

The Mets bounced back nicely from a disappointing 2-1 series loss against Atlanta to beat the Red Sox in back-to-back games in Boston earlier this week. The 15 runs in two games was a welcome outburst of offense after managing only five total runs in three games against Atlanta.

After hitting 53 home runs and racking up 120 RBIs as a rookie last season, Pete Alonso is off to a slow start in 2020 with only two hits in 20 at-bats, though one of those two hits was indeed a home run. The offense should see another uptick in production when Alonso finds his swing.

Betting Pick: New York -176

The Mets are 5-0 across Jacob deGrom’s last five starts, including this year’s season opener. Boston will get its offense back on track eventually, but it isn’t likely to happen against one of the game’s best pitchers.
