How We Rank Manitoba Sportsbooks

Our three-layered approach begins with each sportsbook’s nuts and bolts, including critical information about availability in your region, payout options, ratings from mobile app users and more. We also analyze and rank each sportsbook in six different categories: Bonus Availability, Sports Odds Variety, User Experience, Safety & Security, Regional Availability and Payout Speed.

Next, an experienced betting expert fact-checks our review to ensure the rankings are based on the most recent and accurate information. Finally, the review is passed onto our publishers, who give the green light to go live.

This thorough quality assurance process is complemented by unique features that help you envision your betting experience before you even sign up. Each review features a bulleted “strengths and weaknesses” category, a section about apps and features, an area that covers customer safety, and a chart that compares that sportsbook to its competitors. That attention to detail is why Odds Shark is considered a premier voice in the sports betting industry, having served as a trusted and reliable source for three decades.

Is Sports Betting Legal in Manitoba?

Sports betting has been legal in Manitoba for nearly 40 years, dating back to Sport Select’s arrival via the Western Canadian Lottery Corporation (WCLC). It’s only gotten better through the addition of online and live betting options, and the future is bright now that single-game betting is legal in Manitoba.

The Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation (MBLL) operates PlayNow.com, which is Manitoba’s lone provincially regulated single-game betting option. However, Manitoba sports bettors can also choose from a wide variety of online sportsbooks that offer generous bonuses, better odds and more betting options.

Major moments in sports betting regulation in Manitoba

  1. 1970

Manitoba becomes one of the first provinces to conduct lotteries after the Manitoba Centennial Lottery Act is passed. The Act, which supported Manitoba’s 100th anniversary, came one year after amendments to the Canadian Criminal Code gave provinces the authority to operate lotteries and casinos.

  2. 1989

Sports betting comes to Manitoba with the introduction of Sport Select. Run by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation, Sport Select features fixed-odds betting on the moneyline, point spread and over/under in various sports. However, since single-game betting was still illegal under the Canadian Criminal Code, Sport Select required players to combine (parlay) all of their selections on one ticket and get all of their selections right to win. Bettors are also required to purchase their Sport Select tickets in person at select retailers.

  3. 2013

PlayNow.com, an online gambling portal owned and operated by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, expands to Manitoba via partnership with the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation. The addition of PlayNow enables Manitoba residents to place sports bets online and take advantage of live betting options.

  4. 2021

Bill C-218, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, makes it possible for provinces to offer single-game sports betting. Soon after the bill is passed, Sport Select introduces single-game betting and also adds futures betting.

Manitoba Sports Betting Tips

Watching sports is fun, but having a little money on the line can make things even more exciting. Of course, you’ll enjoy sports betting much more if you’re able to make some money in the process, or at least avoid losing your shirt.

To keep things enjoyable, the most important rule is to never get carried away. Identify a bankroll (the total amount of money you can afford to lose without it drastically impacting your life) and then limit yourself to a small percentage of that bankroll on every bet you place. Even the world’s best sports bettors go through occasional losing streaks, so make sure not to “chase your losses” by upping your stakes to get even.

Other sports betting tips for Manitoba beginners include shopping for the best possible odds, monitoring how the odds shift throughout the day, and using the best Manitoba sports betting sites.

Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be ready to bet on the biggest games of the day. The National Hockey League’s Winnipeg Jets and the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers are the most popular sports teams in Manitoba, but bettors in the province have plenty of other betting options as well.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Raptors are Manitobans’ favorite Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association teams, while many in the province root for the nearby Minnesota Vikings in NFL action. Minor league teams like the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, Canadian Elite Basketball Association’s Winnipeg Sea Bears and Canadian Premier League’s Valour FC soccer club also receive plenty of support.

Manitoba Lotteries and Casinos

Legalized gambling in Manitoba has been provided by the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Corporation (MBLL) since the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission merged with the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation in 2013. Based out of Winnipeg, the MBLL is a crown agency of the Manitoba government whose oversight includes Western Canada Lottery Corporation products sold via ticket retailers, two Casinos of Winnipeg properties, the PlayNow.com online sports betting portal and video lottery terminals (VLTs) throughout the province.

All gambling products run by the MBLL are regulated by the Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba, which licenses charitable gaming activities, ensures the technical integrity of games and equipment, monitors compliance and more.

In addition to the two Casinos of Winnipeg properties (Club Regent Casino and McPhillips Station Casino), Manitoba features six First Nations casinos: Aseneskak Casino, Niichi Gaming & Leisure Centre, South Beach Casino & Resort, Sand Hills Casino, Swan Lake First Nation Gaming Centre #7 and Swan Lake First Nation Gaming Centre #8a. None of Manitoba’s land-based casinos offer sports betting.

How to Sign Up at a Manitoba Sportsbook

  • Choose the best sportsbook for you: Playnow.com is the only provincially-regulated betting site in Manitoba, but other online sportsbooks provide more betting options, not to mention generous signup bonuses. Read our sportsbook reviews to determine which betting site is the best choice for you.

  • Sign up: Signing up for a sportsbook requires providing personal information that confirms your location and protects your identity.

  • Pick your bonus: PlayNow and other legal betting sites often offer welcome bonuses (or signup bonuses) to attract new customers. These Manitoba sports betting promos can vary throughout the year, so make sure you keep checking our reviews to capitalize on the best time to sign up. It’s also wise to sign up at multiple betting sites to cash in on as many bonuses as you can.

  • Make your deposit: The arrival of legalized sports betting in Canada has made it much easier to fund your sportsbook account. In fact, you may be able to send money via Interac e-transfer! Consult our sportsbook reviews for a detailed list of banking options available at each betting site.

  • Place your bet: Now that you’ve got money in your sportsbook account, you’re ready to get in the action! Check out the many different ways to bet on tonight’s game, ensure you’re getting the best possible odds, and don’t risk more than you can afford to lose.

  • Withdraw your winnings: It’s much easier to win your bet when you can wager on one game at a time. If you picked a winner on your first try, you’ll be able to withdraw your winnings just as easily as you made your deposit. (Just make sure that if you got a signup bonus, you’ve met any rollover requirements associated with the promotion before requesting your first withdrawal.)
