College Park is a Tough Place to Win for Visiting Teams

The Maryland Terrapins are having a decent season at 21-8 SU, but they’ve been really good on home court, posting a 15-3 record overall and 7-1 in conference play including a 14-point win over Big Ten-leading Purdue. That straight up record comes in to play this afternoon as the Pins welcome Michigan as a one-point home dog with the total set at 130.

Standout Stats

  • Michigan is 14-4 SU and 12-6 ATS in conference play, however, the Wolverines are just 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS on the road. The Wolverines have been much better on home court and have lost road games to Penn State, Wisconsin and Iowa – all teams below them in the standings.
  • Wolverines’ No. 3 scorer, guard Charles Matthews (12.8 points per game), will miss his second game in a row with an ankle injury. Isiah Livers started in his place last game and had 12 points, matching his second-highest total of the season.
  • Michigan won the first meeting of these teams this season 65-52 two weeks ago in Ann Arbour. Matthews was the leading scorer with 14 points as the Wolverines responded to the Penn State loss.
  • Maryland is 4-2 SU and ATS in its last six games and 3-0 SU and ATS in their last three home games – including as 2.5-point dogs vs Purdue. Maryland is No. 2 in the conference with a 38.9 opponents’ field goal percentage.
  • The Wolverines have the No. 3 scoring defense in the NCAA (58.2 ppg) and the No. 1 scoring defense in the Big 10 (60.4 ppg).
  • The Terrapins are the No. 2 three-point shooting team in the conference at 36.7 percent while Michigan is No. 1 at defending the three with its opponents shooting just 29.3 percent. Maryland shot just 27.3 percent in the first meeting this year, their second-worst three-point shooting game in conference play. The worst was last time out vs Penn State on Wednesday – 10.5 percent.
  • Michigan and Maryland are both near the bottom of the Big Ten in pace. The O/U is 7-11 in Michigan’s conference games and 6-10-2 for Maryland. They played to just 117 points on February 16, hitting the UNDER by 13.
  • The total has gone UNDER in eight of Michigan’s last 12 games and in four of Maryland’s last six games. These are the No. 1 and No. 4 scoring defenses in the conference.

My Pick for Michigan vs Maryland

UNDER 130

I may live to regret this, but the numbers indicate that this game could be headed for an UNDER. The No. 2 team in the conference on the road will run up against a Maryland team that has played to the UNDER vs Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin in three of its last four home games.

Michigan is missing one of its leading scorers and the teams are both near the bottom of the conference in pace.

Michigan is 5-3 SU and 4-4 ATS on the road in Big Ten play.away The teams played to a total of 117 points in their first meeting. Michigan and Maryland are both near the bottom of the Big Ten in pace of play.
