Soon after Tyron Woodley upset Robbie Lawler to become the new welterweight champion, fantasy matchmakers got to work on predicting his next fight, with many presuming Stephen Thompson would be next in line for a title shot. Woodley, however, has his eyes on a big money fight, and was quick to try to set up fights with both Nick Diaz and Georges St-Pierre.
When asked about the call-out via text message from MMAfighting.com, GSP responded “Yes” when asked if he wanted the fight. So with the best welterweight in the history of the sport on board, it appears as if Woodley’s wish for a big money fight will come to fruition.
The UFC has yet to comment and the fight is far from official, but oddsmakers opened St-Pierre as a -150 favorite, with the champ coming in at +120. Considering St-Pierre hasn’t fought since November 2013, the line is a bit of a surprise and slightly reminiscent of Brock Lesnar Sportsbook at -200 vs Mark Hunt at UFC 200, only to quickly be bet into an underdog. Being one of the biggest names in the history of the sport is probably reason enough for GSP to open as the favorite, but expect this line to move.
UFC 205 on November 12 at Madison Square Garden would be a logical target for the fight to take place at as the UFC will be looking to make a major splash in their debut event in New York.
