Boston’s Defense Comes Up Big Against Washington
The Celtics cruised to a commanding win in their last game as they defeated the Washington Wizards 112-94 on Sunday to snap a two-game skid. Boston opened up a 34-15 lead in the first quarter and never looked back as Jaylen Brown (24 points), Jayson Tatum (23 points) and Malcolm Brogdon (23 points) each scored 20-plus in the win. It was a defensive clinic for the Celtics as the Wizards’ top scorer in the game, Kristaps Porzingis, finished with just 17 points.
The victory marked Boston’s strongest defensive effort of the season after allowing at least 120 points in three straight games. The Celtics owned the top defense in the NBA last season, allowing just 103.9 points per game, but they have been middling so far at 18th overall (114.5 points).
Mitchell Pops Off Again As Cavs Win Fifth Straight
The Cavs picked up their fifth consecutive win on Sunday, downing the New York Knicks 121-108. The game was tight until the fourth quarter when Cleveland broke it open, outscoring New York 37-15 to complete the late comeback. Donovan Mitchell was on fire with 38 points and a career-high 12 assists on 12-for-20 shooting while Kevin Love added 29 points in just 22 minutes off the bench.
Mitchell has been even better than expected for the Cavs since being acquired from the Utah Jazz this offseason. The shooting guard is averaging 32.2 points per game – up nearly seven points from last season’s average and more than double Cleveland’s second-best scorer (Evan Mobley, 15.8).
The Cavaliers have gotten off to a hot start even without Darius Garland – the team’s leading scorer last season – who is back practicing following an eye injury.
Celtics: Keys To Win
The Celtics showed flashes of their usual selves in the last game as they challenged the Wizards offense, holding them to under 39 percent from the field and 22 percent from three-point land. If Boston can bring that same defensive intensity to Cleveland, they could snap the Cavaliers’ run.
Cavaliers: Keys To Win
Mitchell has been the heartbeat of this Cavs team so far this season and there’s no reason why that shouldn’t continue. The shooting guard ranks fifth in points per game and 13th in total field-goal attempts this season. If they can keep getting the ball to Mitchell, good things will happen.
