Mavericks Look To Get Back To Defensive Roots
Dallas fell 114-109 to the Utah Jazz in its first game back from the break on Friday as Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points while Ruby Gobert (14 points, 17 rebounds) led the way for Utah. The Mavericks got 20-plus point performances from Luka Doncic (23 points, 11 rebounds), Dwight Powell (22 points) and Spencer Dinwiddie (20 points) but simply gave up too much defensively to the Jazz.
Friday’s loss was a rare defensive lapse for Dallas, which owns the second-best defense in the NBA this season (103.5 points against per game). Prior to the All-Star break, the Mavericks were allowing just 101.6 points over their last eight games – a 6-2 run. Doncic had picked up the pace as well, averaging 34.7 points over his last 10 outings, including three 40-plus point performances and a 51-point showing.
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Trey Burke (shoulder) are questionable, Marquese Chriss (ankle) is doubtful, and Theo Pinson (finger) is out.
Warriors Cruise To Win Over Trail Blazers In First Game Back
The Warriors cruised to victory on Thursday with a 132-95 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in their first game back in action. It was a true team effort from Golden State as eight players finished in double digits for scoring. Steph Curry had just 18 points but was happy to share the ball, adding 14 assists, while Klay Thompson also scored 18. The Splash Brothers played just 27 and 25 minutes, respectively, in a smooth win for the Warriors.
Golden State dropped out of first place in the Western Conference prior to the All-Star break thanks to a 1-4 run. Before the minor skid, the Warriors had won nine straight games and they’ll look to get back to their winning ways down the stretch with an almost fully healthy roster.
Draymond Green (calf) remains out week-to-week while Thompson (illness) and Andre Iguodala (back) are questionable.
Mavericks vs WarriorsPick & Insights
Mavericks: Keys to Cover
The Mavericks pride themselves on an elite defensive game and they’ll need to be exceptional on Sunday to stop the high-powered Warriors. Golden State obviously prides itself on its three-point shooting, ranking fifth in the league at 36.2 percent. Dallas will try to counter with its fifth-ranked three-point defense, holding opponents to just 33.7 percent from beyond the arc this season.
Warriors: Keys to Cover
The Warriors will be challenged by the Mavs’ stout defense but their deep offense should be enough to overpower Dallas. Although Thompson is still on restricted minutes, he’s averaging 18.6 points over his last 10 games, so his status will be key for Golden State’s success in this matchup.
