Doncic Comes Up Clutch As Mavs Top Lakers
The Mavericks ended a two-game slide on Thursday, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 119-115 in overtime. Luka Doncic was a one-man show, recording 35 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists for a triple-double, while scoring several clutch three-pointers to earn Dallas the win. Russell Westbrook (28 points) and LeBron James (24 points) led Los Angeles in a losing effort.
Dallas has slowed down over the last week, going 2-3 following a seven-game winning streak that was snapped early this month. Doncic has done everything in his power to give his team a chance, though, averaging 34.8 points per game through five contests in January while recording two triple-doubles and two double-doubles.
Lillard Scores 50 But Trail Blazers Fall To Cavaliers
The Trail Blazers suffered their fifth straight defeat on Thursday, falling 119-113 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Damian Lillard scored a season-high 50 points but couldn’t drag his team to victory singlehandedly as Jerami Grant (22 points) was the only other player to record more than 15 points in the loss. Donovan Mitchell (26 points), Jarrett Allen (24 points) and Darius Garland (20 points) each scored 20-plus for Cleveland.
Portland has obviously been struggling, entering Saturday with just two wins in its last 11 contests, but things might get even more challenging in this matchup as Lillard is listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The Trail Blazers are set to play a back-to-back this weekend and it’s possible that the star point guard is given a rest on Saturday heal up.
Mavericks Player Prop: Doncic OVER 34.5 Points (-115)
Doncic has been on a tear all season long is showing no signs of slowing down. The Mavs star has scored at least 32 points in nine of his last 10 contests and his season average of 34.3 points tells us that he’s got a pretty good chance at hitting the OVER on Saturday.
Trail Blazers Player Prop: Lillard OVER 29.5 Points (-120)
Lillard was questionable heading into Thursday’s game but still managed to put up 50 points in 40 minutes. If he’s good to go on Saturday, he’ll need to bring that same kind of heat to give his team a chance to snap their losing skid. Look for Lillard to hit the OVER on 29.5 points if he’s in the lineup.
Mavericks vs Trail Blazers Picks & Insights
Mavericks: Keys To Victory
Assuming Doncic scores his usual 30 or 40 points, the Mavericks will still need to find a way to give their star some support. Christian Wood has had a solid start to January, averaging nearly 21 points per game, but Dallas hasn’t really had much help off the bench. Portland isn’t an offensive powerhouse either, but it’ll go a long way for Dallas if Doncic can get some help up front.
Trail Blazers: Keys To Victory
Portland has struggled of late due to some lacklustre offense as the team is scoring just 105.8 points per game during its current skid – and that’s with Lillard scoring 30-plus in each of the last three contests. The Trail Blazers will need others like Anfernee Simons and Grant to have strong performances if they’re going to snap the losing streak.
