Rockets are double-digit dogs for first time since end of 2016
The Houston Rockets have been a dominant force since the Sportsbook tip of the 2017-18 season but opened as 12-point underdogs vs the Golden State Warriors in Game 6 tonight. The Rockets haven’t been a double-digit dog since December 2016, which coincidentally was also against the Warriors. But with point guard Chris Paul out of the lineup due to a hamstring injury, Houston could be a very tough sell to knock off Golden State tonight especially since the Dubs had won 16 straight playoff games at Oracle Arena prior to the Game 2 upset by the Rockets.
Chris Paul’s absence cannot be overstated for how much it could influence tonight’s outcome. Paul was the driving force for the Rockets victories in Games 4 and 5 that saw him score 47 points combined while hitting 9 of 18 three-pointers. His leadership and clutch scoring took the pressure off of MVP favorite James Harden, who looked tentative at times and finished the last two games shooting an ugly 3 for 23 from deep.
Game 6 will be a true legacy test for Harden as he has a chance to wash away the stench of coming up small in past postseason appearances and lead the Rockets to its first NBA Finals since 1995. If bettors think Harden and the Rockets live up to that potential, they should know that Houston is 4-2 SU and ATS in six road playoff games this season.
As for the Warriors, they have their own injury issues to deal with as Andre Iguodala has missed the last two games of the series with a knee injury while Klay Thompson has been dealing with a sore knee from a collision in Game 4.
Although the Warriors have plenty of talent to rely on other than Iggy and Klay, what should be concerning for the Dubs is how uncharacteristically poor they’ve shot in the last two games. The Warriors were 22 for 64 from three-point range and scored a combined 34 points total in the last two fourth quarters. If you’re planning to back Golden State tonight, be aware that they’re 7-13 against the spread in their last 20 home games of faves of 12 points or more.
The total opened at 212.5 and UNDER bettors have been cashing in on this series as the UNDER has hit in four of the five games with an average combined score of 209.8 points per game.
