James Drops Second 50-Point Game In A Week
LeBron James dropped his second 50-point performance of the season – and second in his last three games – to help his Lakers snap a two-game skid as they defeated the Washington Wizards 122-109 on Friday. Kyle Kuzma (23 points) and Corey Kispert (21 points) each had 20-plus to lead the Wizards but couldn’t keep up with James.
James’ second 50-point game of the year marked the first time since 2009 that he’s had multiple 50-point games in a season. LeBron is up to 32.6 points per game over his last 10 outings and 29.7 points per game on the season, tied with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid for the top mark in the NBA.
James (knee) and Talen Horton-Tucker (ankle) are questionable while Malik Monk (shoulder) is probable.
Suns’ Struggles Continue Without Paul
The Suns fell 117-112 to the Toronto Raptors on Friday thanks to a 42-point performance from Gary Trent Jr. as a fourth-quarter rally fell short for Phoenix. Pascal Siakam scored 25 points and added 10 assists for the Raptors while Cameron Payne (24 points) and Devin Booker (22 points) led the way for the Suns.
Phoenix is now 5-4 since the All-Star break – a span in which they’ve been without point guard Chris Paul, who fractured his thumb in the final game before the festivities. For reference, the club was 18-1 in the 19 games prior to the break, which should tell you exactly how much they’re missing Paul.
Camerson Johnson (quadriceps) is out for Sunday’s game.
Lakers vs Suns Pick & Insights
Lakers: Keys to Cover
The Lakers have won two games since the All-Star break – both featuring 50-plus point performances from James. Although he’s still proven himself to be one of the best players in the league, the 37-year-old isn’t what he used to be physically and is clearly dealing with some ailments. That said, the Lakers will be hoping that James is good to go Sunday as he’s likely their only chance to keep this one close.
Suns: Keys to Cover
The Suns haven’t quite hit their stride since the break but they’ll have to get used to life without Paul as the star guard remains out for at least a few more weeks. Phoenix should still have enough firepower in Booker and Deandre Ayton to take advantage of a lackluster Los Angeles defense, which is allowing 113.2 points per game – ranked 26th in the NBA.
