Morant Steals The Show With 47-Point Performance
Ja Morant came up big for the Grizzlies in Game 2, scoring 47 points, eight assists and eight rebounds to help his squad even up the series at 1-1. Morant led his team almost singlehandedly as only three others scored in double digits for Memphis, with Ziaire Williams dropping just 14 points to finish as the club’s second-highest scorer in the win.
Morant’s performance speaks for itself but it’s hard to overstate just how dominant the star point guard was in Game 2. Morant scored the final 15 points of the game for Memphis, helping the Grizzlies overcome a late fourth-quarter deficit to steal the win. He scored 18 of his 47 points in the final period, and did so with limited vision in his left eye after being punched while going for a rebound late in the third quarter.
Dillon Brooks (suspension) is out for Game 3.
Physicality Picks Up In Game 2
The Warriors played a solid game on Tuesday but ultimately couldn’t contain Morant, who was determined to even up the series for his Grizzlies. Steph Curry scored 27 points to lead Golden State while Jordan Poole also had 20 in the loss.
Other than the Morant show, the secondary story of the game was the physicality. Early in the first quarter, Brooks swatted at Warriors guard Gary Payton II while he drove for a layup, leading to an ejection for Brooks and what was later revealed as a broken elbow for Payton. Draymond Green then went down just a few moments later to get stitches for a cut near his eye, flashing middle fingers at the Memphis faithful on his way to the locker room.
Payton (elbow) is out while Andre Iguodala (neck) also remains out.
Grizzlies vs Warriors Pick & Insights
Grizzlies: Keys to Cover
While it did take a superhuman performance from Morant to win Game 2, the Grizzlies have been right with the Warriors in this series, losing Game 1 by just a single point. Memphis owned the top-ranked offense in the NBA this season at 115.4 points per game thanks to excellent depth – they’ll need to flex that in Game 3 to take the series lead.
Warriors: Keys to Cover
If Golden State is going to get past Memphis, they’ll need a lot more from Klay Thompson. The guard is averaging 20 points in these playoffs but just 13.5 in two games against the Grizzlies. Thompson is 5-for-22 from beyond the arc in the series – he’ll need to be much better than that if the Warriors are going to win.
