Grizzlies' Failures on the Road Should Worry Bettors
Less than a week ago it seemed like the San Antonio Spurs were on cruise control on their way to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. But thanks to two huge victories by the Memphis Grizzlies in Tennessee, the shape of this first-round series has been flipped on its head. With Game 5 on tap for Tuesday and the series tied at two games apiece, sportsbooks opened the Grizz as 10-point underdogs with a total of 186.5.
It’s been a totally different story in Texas, however. Memphis dropped the first two games at AT&T Center by a combined 43 points. The Grizzlies always play tough at home but are a far riskier bet on the road, so that’s not much of a surprise.
Kawhi Leonard scored a career playoff-high 43 points in Game 4, a 110-108 overtime setback for the Spurs, to mark the third time in the series he either matched or exceeded a previous personal best. The ever-serious Leonard went 7-for-10 from 3-point range and added eight rebounds and six steals while the rest of the Spurs went a combined 2-for-20 from beyond the arc.
Memphis’ failures on the road date back to the end of the regular season, as the Grizzlies are an ugly 0-8 straight up in their last eight away from home.
