Kyle Lowry and the Miami Heat visit the Lakers on Wednesday night.

Heat Favored Over Short-Handed Lakers

Miami News & Notes

After their five-game win streak was snapped by the Boston Celtics, the Heat rebounded with a 118-115 win over the Utah Jazz on Saturday before falling 113-96 to the Denver Nuggets in their last outing Monday. Jimmy Butler was stellar as he dropped 31 points, eight assists and five rebounds in a losing effort but Tyler Herro had an uncharacteristic night with just 11 points and five assists.

Butler leads the team in scoring, averaging 25.3 points per game. Herro (20.3 points per game) and Bam Adebayo (18.3 points, 11.8 rebounds) have been key cogs in Miami’s early-season success as well.

Markieff Morris (neck) is out for Wednesday’s contest following an altercation with Denver’s Nikola Jokic on Monday. Herro (back) and Adebayo (knee) are also listed as questionable.

Los Angeles News & Notes

The Lakers eked out a 126-123 overtime win over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday to get back above .500. Carmelo Anthony (29 points) hit a clutch three-pointer in the extra frame to put Los Angeles up 122-121 and the Lakers held on from there for the victory.

Anthony Davis led all scorers with 32 points while grabbing 12 boards, and Russell Westbrook chipped in with 17 points, 14 assists and 12 rebounds for a triple-double.

LeBron James leads the Lakers with 24.8 points per game while Davis isn’t too far behind at 23.9. James (abdominal) will miss his fourth straight contest while Davis (thumb) is listed as probable.

How Miami Will Cover

The Heat have been one of the NBA’s top teams, buoyed by the league’s third-ranked defense (101.5 points against per game). The Lakers will be without James and even if Davis does play, he may not be at 100 percent. Assuming Miami’s big three of Butler, Herro and Adebayo are clicking offensively, they should be able to top a short-handed Los Angeles squad.

How Los Angeles Will Cover

Without James, the Lakers will need their other big names to step up and carry the load. Anthony was excellent in his last game as he dropped a season-high 29 points off the bench, including 7-for-10 shooting beyond the arc. Westbrook, though, has struggled in his last two outings, averaging just 12.5 points. Los Angeles will need both players to be firing on all cylinders to cover the spread on Wednesday.
