Bay Area Battle: Westbrook's Thunder Huge Underdogs vs. Durant's Warriors
In what’s unquestionably the biggest game of the young NBA season, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook will square off as opponents for the first time when the Oklahoma City Thunder invade Oracle Arena for a date with the stacked Golden State Warriors on Thursday.
Oddsmakers initially set the Warriors as healthy 11-point home faves with a total of 226.5.
Golden State rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the Western Conference finals to defeat OKC last spring, a comeback that played a major part in Durant’s decision to join the Dubs. Westbrook and Durant have spent the summer trading barbs, and it’s quite clear there’s no shortage of animosity between the former teammates.
Westbrook has led the Thunder to a 4-0 start in the post-Durant era, which isn’t much of a surprise. The explosive point guard is averaging an eye-popping 37.8 points per game on 46 percent shooting so far. Westbrook has eclipsed the 32-point mark in every game, including a 51-point effort against the lowly Phoenix Suns on October 28.
Durant has fit in just fine with the Warriors offense, but his teammates have struggled to duplicate the effort. The University of Texas product is averaging 28.5 points and shooting 57 percent from the field with his new squad.
The Thunder have historically struggled to cover the spread in the Bay Area, going 1-7 ATS in their last eight trips to Oakland.
