Warriors, Spurs Finally Meet In The Postseason
Despite winning the NBA Western Conference each of the past two seasons, the Golden State Warriors managed to avoid a series with the San Antonio Spurs on both occasions. Not this time around. The Warriors and Spurs met three times during the regular season with Gregg Popovich and company picking up two wins while holding the best offense in the NBA to 98.3 ppg.
Keep in mind, one of the Spurs two regular season wins against the Warriors saw Golden State send out a starting five of Patrick McCaw, Shaun Livingston, Kevon Looney, Matt Barnes and Zaza Pachulia. Instead of dealing with the Warriors B-unit, the Spurs will need to compete with a Warriors starting five that is averaging 87.2 points while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor and 42.7 percent from beyond the arc during the playoffs.
The key to Game 1 is the health of Kawhi Leonard. Multiple reports are stating that the Spurs star will start despite dealing with a sprained ankle. Leonard is needed on both ends of the floor both to exploit a middling Warriors defense and to try and lock down Kevin Durant. The Spurs may have dominated a Houston Rockets team who couldn’t buy a bucket if they won the lottery without Leonard but that is not happening against the Warriors.
