Hernandez and Liriano Both in Search of Brighter Skies
The Mariners and Pirates will set sail on an interleague series tonight as they each send pitchers to the mound – Felix Hernandez (4-4, 3.23 ERA) and Francisco Liriano (6-9, 4.96 ERA) – who are merely shadows of their former selves.
Seattle is 9-3 in interleague play this season and will be hoping for the real Hernandez tonight to keep that train rolling. In his first start back from a lengthy DL stint, King Felix got slapped around for 10 hits at Safeco Field. Hernandez seems to have dropped off a cliff this year and has lost a ton of velocity on his fastball. Things aren’t looking good, but the man he will face tonight has looked even worse.
If Hernandez fell off a cliff this year, Liriano fell off a mountain – and he didn’t land inside the strike zone. The lefty’s ERA has hovered around five all year and he has a WHIP over 1.50 – that’s awful. He has been limiting teams to a few fewer runs recently but it’s hard to have confidence in a guy who leads the league in issued walks.
This is an ugly one that seems like a coin flip. It may be a safer play to try a total bet – I’m thinking the OVER.
