Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Expert Picks

Minnesota Timberwolves ATS -5 (-108), ML (-186)

The Timberwolves' last look at the Mavericks came in a five-game series loss which prevented the franchise's first-ever Finals appearance. Dallas head coach Jason Kidd consistently put superstar Luka Doncic in isolation situations, most famously during the dying moments of Game 2 when he had Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert on an island before sinking a game-winning 3-pointer over the 7-footer's outstretched arm. The pick-and-roll with Dereck Lively II which sent the big man to the rim for numerous alley-oops was also extremely effective.

The Mavericks are playing on the second night of a back-to-back slate after defeating the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City on Monday by a score of 110-102. Doncic had a rough shooting night, converting only five of his 22 shot attempts to end with 15 points, while Kyrie Irving registered a game-high 23 points and nine dimes in 36 minutes. The team went 9-5 on no rest in 2023-24 and 7-5 the year prior, and Irving was the only starter to play more than 33 minutes.

Unlike the conference finals, Minnesota actually dominated the four games they played versus Dallas during the regular season, taking three of four meetings and prevailing by an average margin of victory of 20 points. They've won two in a row SU against the Sacramento Kings and feisty Toronto Raptors, and were one of the stronger teams in their own backyard last season as one of just five teams with at least 30 wins.

The Timberwolves should rightfully be favored here, as they were 23-7 last season SU when favored by five or more points at home. They were unfortunately only 12-18 ATS under those circumstances, though, but even so, that's not enough to deter this pick. Minnesota should have some extra motivation, and if there was ever a time to make a statement, it's when the Mavericks don't have a break between games.

UNDER 222.5 Total Points (-108)

It was two entirely different scenarios playing out in the OVER/UNDER market during the regular season and then the playoffs, as the Timberwolves and Mavericks didn't connect on a single OVER during their four games in December and January.

However, in the postseason, they went OVER in four of their five games, although just two of those scores would have exceeded Tuesday's total of 222.5 points. Based on this history, I'll be wagering on the UNDER while also taking into account both teams currently ranking in the bottom-third of the Association in points per game.

Dallas Mavericks vs. Minnesota Timberwolves Player Prop

Klay Thompson OVER 3.5 Made 3-Pointers (+100)

The player prop being set at 3.5 for made 3-pointers at even money for one of the greatest outside shooters in league history has plenty of upside.

Klay Thompson has surpassed that many makes from deep in each of his first three appearances in a Mavericks uniform. He's also averaging the fifth-most 3-pointers of any player overall at 11, which ties him with Doncic. His offensive repertoire is mostly contained to standing on the perimeter and firing up shots, so as long as that trend continues, his 3-point numbers should flourish.
