Baylor Looking To Build On Last Year’s Amazing Results
After going just 2-7 SU in 2020, the Bears bounced back with one of the best seasons in program history in 2021. Baylor went 12-2 SU and 10-4 ATS, setting a program record with 12 victories and winning both the Big 12 championship and the Sugar Bowl. To build on that success, Baylor will have to survive a brutal road schedule this season that starts with this early test in Provo.
Baylor breezed by the Albany Great Danes in a 69-10 blowout win on Saturday as 42.5-point favorites at home. Blake Shapen went 17-for-20 with 214 passing yards and two touchdown passes and the team rushed for 259 yards and seven majors on 41 carries. Shapen won the starting quarterback job from Gerry Bohanon in the spring and will be a key piece in Baylor’s potential success this season.
BYU’s Offense Hopes To Lead The Way This Season
The Cougars finished their regular season in 2021 on a 5-0 SU run and scored 43 points per game over that stretch. The offense picked up where it left off last year on Saturday in a 50-21 win over the South Florida Bulls as BYU easily covered the spread as an 11.5-point road favorite. Jaren Hall went 25-for-32 with 261 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception while Christopher Brooks had 13 carries for 135 yards and a score.
Most of the key pieces from last year’s high-powered offense returned this season, creating optimism around the program that BYU can improve on last year’s 10-3 SU and 5-8 ATS campaign. The talent is in place to produce a memorable season, but the defense will need to take a step forward if BYU hopes to make a real splash.
Baylor: Keys To Victory
Blake Shapen looked the part of a star in the making last season in big wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State down the stretch. This will be just the second road game of his career, though. If the road crowd doesn’t bother him and he plays to his potential, Baylor likely comes away with an upset win as a Baylor vs BYU prediction.
BYU: Keys To Victory
The Cougars defense was torched for 38 points in a 38-24 road loss to Baylor last season. The shift to home-field advantage will help, but this defensive unit will need to play a lot better this time around to secure a victory as a Baylor vs BYU pick at home.
