How to Bet on the CFL
Using a combination of CFL scores and team stats, you can make educated bets. Even if you only have a basic knowledge of the players and teams (there’s only nine so it’s easier to keep track) you’ll be able to make smart decisions when determining which CFL predictions to make. You can check out our CFL odds page, CFL scores page and CFL standings page to begin your handicapping journey.
There are three basic bets you should know about when making CFL predictions: moneyline, totals and point spread.
Moneyline
Moneyline bets are a great option for CFL betting. A moneyline bet requires bettors to pick an outright Sportsbook in the matchup. Many bettors love making moneyline bets because the team selected doesn’t have to win by a certain amount, they just have to win the game. If you predict an upset by betting on the underdog, you could find yourself with a great payout.
This is how moneyline bets work: If Montreal (-150) is playing British Columbia (+170), the Alouettes are the favorite and the Lions are the underdog. (The favorite is always represented by the minus sign while the underdog is represented by the plus sign.) The Lions are the underdog in this case and a $100 wager will result in $170 in winnings.
Totals (Over/under)
Totals, also known as over/under is a wager on whether the combined total of points scored by two teams in a game will be more or less than a specified number.
When making CFL picks, a totals bet works like this: If the sportsbooks project that the Hamilton vs Calgary game total would be 40.5, you could place your wager on whether the total number of points scored would be more or less than that number. If the total score between the Tiger Cats and the Stampeders is less than 40 points and you bet the under, you’d win. On the other hand, if you bet the over and the total number of points scored was 41 or more, you’d win.
Point Spread
Many people bet on the point spread. This gives you a 50/50 chance of winning when making your CFL predictions. Moreover, the point spread gives the underdog team an advantage before the game starts.
For instance, if a game between Saskatchewan and Ottawa has a 3.0 spread for the Roughriders and -3.0 for the RedBlacks, Saskatchewan is the underdog and Ottawa is the favorite. If you bet on the Redblacks, they will have to win by 3 or more points. If you bet on the Roughriders, they will have to win or lose the game by less than 3 points.
Other Types of CFL Bets Offered
Like most team sports, CFL odds give you options to make other types of bets. Whether you’re looking for a bigger payout or to make a more entertaining wager, you can try one of the following CFL picks:
Parlays
Parlay betting is a popular form of sports betting because it allows you to bet on two or more point spreads, totals or moneylines, giving you a higher payout. You have the option of putting multiple bets on the same ticket but there is more risk involved. Plus, in order to win your parlay bet, each team you select to bet on must win. If one team loses, the whole ticket is considered a loss.
Live Betting
Live betting provides bettors with the chance to bet on CFL games on a play-by-play level. At the start of each drive, you can bet on drive results like how the upcoming drive will turn out, whether it will end in a touchdown, goal, turnover, or field goal. As the drive progresses, you have the option to bet on what the next play will be, whether it’s a run, completed pass, incomplete pass, or an interception.
If Winnipeg is playing Toronto and the Blue Bombers opened as the 7-point favorite, they might fall to -4.9 or -3.0 after dropping to a 10-0 deficit early on in the game. Odds can change as the game progresses which is why live betting offers keen bettors a chance to make CFL picks on teams that seem ripe for an upset or comeback.
Props
Prop betting is great for high profile games like the Grey Cup because you can wager on everything from the over/under time on the national anthem, to if the half-time show performer will sing a certain song. For prop bets made during regular season games, you can bet on things like how many yards a player will average, if a kicker will miss a field goal, the temperature at kick-off, and which team will score first.
Futures
Futures are long-term CFL picks. These predictions have a payout closer to the end of the season because they are wagers on which team will win their division and which team will win the Grey Cup.
