Essential CFL Betting Tips and Information
If you’re a football fan curious about betting the CFL, it’s important to know some key differences between the CFL and NFL. In the CFL, each team has 12 players on the field (it’s 11 in the NFL) and the field is a little larger but offenses have less time to call each play. Most importantly, offenses are allowed three downs, not four like in the NFL, to get a first down. Keep reading some helpful information below about betting on CFL games.
Popular Bet Types
Moneyline
This is a bet on which team wins the game. If you make a moneyline bet on a team and they win, your bet wins. If your team loses, the bet loses. If both teams ties, you get your original stake back.
Point Spread
Spreads are a popular way to bet on CFL games. If you take a favorite on a point spread (represented by a negative number), they need to win the game by more than the spread in order for your bet to win. For example, if the Stampeders are -2 point favorites, and they only win by one point (or lose the game), anyone betting Calgary to cover the spread would lose.
Total (OVER/UNDER)
This is a bet on the total number of points scored by both teams (including overtime). So, if the Calgary and Montreal total is 42 and the score winds up 20-14, then UNDER bettors would win (and OVER bettors would lose) because the final score was 34 (20+14) which is less than 42.
Parlay
Parlays allow bettors to string together multiple bets (i.e. spreads, totals, moneylines) to increase a payout. However, these bets are riskier because if even one of the bets loses, the entire parlay loses.
Prop Bet
Prop bets are wagers on specific outcomes during a game or season that can be related to a specific team or player. For instance, an OVER/UNDER prop on how many yards Chad Kelly will throw for.
Futures Bet
Futures bets refer to wagers on events happening later in the season like which team will win the Grey Cup, or who will win an award like Most Outstanding Player.
CFL Betting Strategies
Be Aware Of Injuries
You never want to put a bet in and learn later that a key player you were counting on will miss the game. Make sure you’re following team news closely so you can take into account injuries with each bet you make.
Shop Around
Before placing your CFL wager, take a look at what other odds other sportsbooks are offering for the same game. There’s a good chance that by shopping around, you can get a better number.
Home Field Advantage
Crowd noise can be a real nuisance to an opposing quarterback and a tough travel stretch can wear a team down. Home teams have a slight advantage in the CFL so take that into consideration when you’re handicapping games.
