Nikola Jokic is putting together another MVP-caliber season with career-highs in points (31.6) and assists (9.9) per game, while maintaining an elite rebounding presence. Jokic also leads the NBA with an absurd 47.7% 3-point percentage, despite standing 6’11”. He’s simply doing it all for this Denver team, and the reigning MVP leads the NBA with 15 triple doubles.
New Nuggets teammate Russell Westbrook knows a thing or two about triple doubles, and on Friday night, he and Jokic became the first pair of teammates to record a triple-double in the same game multiple times in a single season. They are also the first duo to record a 25-point triple double in the same regular season game.
Westbrook has been a welcome addition to the Nuggets, entering the starting lineup in recent games and providing high-energy output on both ends of the floor. His presence could become even more vital with Jamal Murray’s new knee injury. He missed the second half of the game on Friday, and he is listed as questionable for today.
Denver will also hope to get forward Aaron Gordon back in the lineup today, after missing the last nine games with a calf injury. If Murray and Gordon are out today, second-year wing Julian Strawther would likely enter the starting lineup. He’s had an impressive sophomore year with 9.5 points per game on efficient 45-38-86 shooting.
The Mavericks will enter this game without Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, but other players have stepped up in their absence. Spencer Dinwiddie has accounted for 36 points and 13 assists over his last two starts, while P.J. Washington has been a two-way force, averaging 15.2 points and 6.7 rebounds over his last ten games.
Dallas has also relied on strong output from its bench in recent games. Jaden Hardy has accounted for 15+ points in four straight games, while offseason addition Quentin Grimes is averaging 13.7 points over his last ten games. The Nuggets are always vulnerable during non-Jokic minutes, especially if Murray and Gordon are out today. Look for the Mavs to take advantage of that during the rare times when Jokic rides the pine.
Injuries have sapped some of the juice out of what would typically be a must-watch Western Conference matchup, but we’ll still be treated to an elite Nuggets offense helmed by Nikola Jokic. However, Denver ranks just 19th in defensive rating and has struggled to put teams away due to its inconsistent stop unit. Even with Doncic and Irving out, the Mavericks’ offense should do enough here to make the over the best play on the board.
Memphis grizzlies vs minnesota timberwolves Prop Bet: Jaden Hardy Over 11.5 Points (-125)
The continued development of scoring guard Jaden Hardy has been a welcome sight for the Mavericks, especially as they remain shorthanded with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving sidelined. Hardy has now scored in double figures in a career-high five consecutive games, including 15+ points in four straight games. Only 22 years old, Hardy is still scratching the surface of his potential, but his ability to get to the rim and score offers significant value to this Dallas lineup. Look for him to continue his recent hot stretch on Sunday
