After an ugly 34-3 opening loss against Georgia, Clemson got back on track, winning six in a row before losing to Louisville last week. In our exclusive LEGOmetrics, we'll take a look at how the Tigers built that six game winning streak. They rocked Appalachian State 66-20, beat NC State 59-35, Stanford 40-14, Florida State 29-13, Wake Forest 49-14 and Virginia 48-31. NC State is the only team in that group with a winning record, and barely at 5-4. Then Clemson faced a pretty good Louisville team, a team with a winning record, and came up on the short end of a 33-21 score, AT home, where they rarely lose (68-4 over the last 11 years).
We took a microscope to the boxscore of that game, and noticed that Clemson QB Cade Klubnik attempted a staggering 56 passes, completed 33 (58.9%) for 228 yards. That worked out to an average of 4.1 yards per pass and that AIN'T good. The Tigers got a great day from RB Phil Mafah who gobbled up 171 yards on the ground, but they also were VERY generous to the Louisville rushing attack that piled up 210 yards.
Looking at Virginia Tech's work last week against Syracuse was a mixed bag. Yes they scored 31 points before losing in OT 38-31, but the Hokies were working with backups at QB (Collin Schlee) and RB (Jeremiah Coney). The starting QB, Kyron Drones, missed the game as well as the No. 1 RB, Bhayshul Tuten, and they lost for the first time in over a month.
But getting back to LEGOmetrics, we not only look at the wins, but at GOOD losses as well. Tech went down to Miami, the No. 4 team in the country, and gave the Hurricanes a tussle, losing 38-34. Drones was 19 of 33 for 189 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT against a rugged Miami defense, and Tuten rumbled for 141 yards. And that wasn't a one off. Bhayshul has piled up 951 yards so far this season in eight games and has found the end zone 14 times. And even without Tuten carrying the mail, the Hokies ate up 249 yards on the ground against Syracuse.
So it will have to be a wait-and-see, an either/or as we get closer to kickoff. According to Tech coach Brent Pry, “Yea, they’re both questionable right now,” he said. “They’re obviously better than they were. Kyron, better than he was last week at this time. Bhayshul probably yet to be determined. Hopefully by the end of tomorrow we feel good about both of those guys.”
Stay real close to the injury reports. If both guys go, we BANG the Hokies drum, hard. If it's Kyron at QB and no Tuten, we will just tickle the Hokies drum. If both guys are out, we would probably suggest that you wash the bet and maybe turn to Clemson for a peanut.
