Cameron Rising featured in our Utah vs Arizona State preview

Utah vs Arizona State Odds & Picks Week 7: No Cam Rising Is A Betting Concern

When will Cam Rising return to the field? The uncertain health status of Utah’s star quarterback has bedeviled both Utes fans and sports bettors for weeks. The questions are only likely to persist heading into Friday night’s Week 7 contest at resurgent Arizona State, where Utah is a 6.5-point favorite.

Rising hasn’t played since Sept. 7, when he injured the ring finger on his throwing hand in a game against Baylor. Since Utes coach Kyle Whittingham doesn’t talk about injuries, the public has been left in the dark about any timeline for Rising’s recovery. Freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson has started the past three games for Utah, most recently a 23-10 home loss to 7.5-point underdog Arizona—which only ratcheted up the anxiety over Rising’s potential return.

Utah vs Arizona state Picks – Week 7

The Utes may be 4-1 overall, but they’ve been dreadful ATS against FBS opponents, covering only once—as a 1.5-point road favorite at Oklahoma State. Dating back to the end of last season, Utah has covered just once in its last seven games against FBS competition. The Arizona game also marked the first time the Utes have lost as a home favorite since a setback to USC in Salt Lake City in 2022.

Arizona State, picked last in the Big 12 preseason poll, is exceeding expectations in its second season under coach Kenny Dillingham. The Sun Devils are 4-1 both overall and ATS, and unbeaten at home after rallying past Kansas last weekend. Arizona State has a workhorse running back in Cam Skattebo, who went for 186 yards against the Jayhawks and 262 against Mississippi State earlier this season.

Smash-mouth Utah, which makes its living by dominating the line of scrimmage, will counter with a defense that ranks second in the Big 12. But the Rising drama is consuming this season for the Utes, who face renewed pressure after looking uncharacteristically stagnant on offense against the Wildcats. KSL reported that Rising is a game-time decision for Arizona State; but he was a game-time decision for Arizona, too.

Utah vs Arizona State Week 7 Pick: Arizona State +6.5 (-110)

Utah has gone UNDER in three of its four games against FBS competition thanks largely to its defense, which is allowing an average of 15 points per game. Arizona State has played some shootouts, and gone OVER in three of five games this season. The total here is a low one, but given that this boils down to a line of scrimmage contest between two run-oriented teams, the UNDER remains the play.

Utah vs Arizona State Week 7 Pick: UNDER 45 (-110)

Utah vs Arizona State News

The Rising saga has dominated the headlines for Utah, which took last week off after its loss to Arizona. The Sun Devils have two defensive starters who will miss the first half of the Utah game after being called for targeting in the second half against Kansas—linebacker Keyshaun Elliott and defensive end Clayton Smith. Elliott ranks second on the team with 36 tackles, while Smith leads ASU in sacks with four.

Utah vs Arizona State Prop Bet: Cam Skattebo Anytime TD (-150)

The senior transfer from Sacramento State is the focal point of the Sun Devils’ offense, and he’s found the end zone in every game this season but one—ironically against Mississippi State, who he torched for 262 yards. Skattebo is also adept at catching passes out of the backfield (he had six against Texas Tech), and will be a threat to score every time the Sun Devils are in the red zone.

Utah vs Arizona State Betting Trends

  • Utah is 4-8-1 ATS as a road favorite over the past five seasons
  • Arizona State is 5-5-1 ATS in two seasons under Dillingham
  • The Sun Devils have gone OVER in four of seven games as a home underdog under Dillingham
  • McCord ranks fourth nationally in passing yards, and has a pair of showcase games remaining at unbeaten (and now nationally ranked) Pitt in two weeks and at home against the Hurricanes to close the regular season. Granted, he’s a very long shot to claim the Heisman. But McCord has attempted 50 and 63 pass attempts in his past two games, so he’ll likely have opportunities to wedge his way into the conversation.
