Prediction Markets Getting In On Astronomer Cheating Allegation

The viral sensation of the week is the clip of Astronomer CEO Andy Byron caught on screen in a loving cuddle at a Coldplay concert with his chief of HR, who is not his wife. The two quickly turned away from the feed, prompting Coldplay singer Chris Martin to suggest they're either shy or having an affair.

    Key Highlights

+ Viral Moment: Prediction markets are capitalizing on Astronomer CEO Andy Byron's intimate act with a co-worker at a Coldplay concert.

+ Parlays: Prediction market Polymarket is offering a two-leg Astronomer Divorce Parlay. A new, decidedly gambling-esque move for a prediction market.

+ Gambling Image: A gambling image is something prediction markets, specifically Kalshi, have been trying to avoid.

Everyone is getting in on the sensation, including prediction markets.

Kalshi Astronomer Markets

On Kalshi, you can find two markets related to Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. The first is whether the CEO will leave his company by the end of the month. The market holds an insane $556,046 in volume, and giving a "Yes" resolution a 45% chance. That market is resolved if either Byron or the company announces that he has left his position.

Andy Burdy Kalshi Market 1

A "Yes" share for this market is currently selling for $0.45 while a "No" is at $0.56.

The second market on the Kalshi platform related to this viral moment is whether Coldplay will discuss the affair in a public setting, accessible to the general public, before August. The chance of a "Yes" resolution is currently at 56%.

Astronomer CEO Divorce Parlay

To get in on the viral moment, Polymarket is offering an "Astronomer Divorce Parlay". The market resolves to "Yes" when two conditions are met:

  • Astronomer CEO Andy Byron or his wife announces an intention to divorce
  • Astronomer CPO Kristin Cabot or her husband announces an intention to divorce

At the time of writing, the Polymarket parlay holds $190,443 in volume with the chance of a "Yes" resolution at 7%.

A fake letter of apology from Andy Byron has been circulating online, which could change where prediction market bettors place their wagers in this ongoing viral saga. So keep your eyes out if you plan on betting this market.

Prediction Market Gambling Image

Offering parlays is new territory for prediction markets. Previously, operators offered markets with only a single leg. Offering parlays is a decided step towards a gambling image. An image that some within the industry have been desperately trying to avoid.

Kalshi has been fighting legal battles across the US to keep its product, which just surpassed $2 billion in volume, alive. The company has been able to do so, arguing that not only can it be regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), but that its product is not gambling.

Though if you go back only a few months, Kalshi was advertising itself as a betting platform.

Kalshi has filed lawsuits in New Jersey, Nevada, and Maryland after receiving cease-and-desist letters from those states' gaming commissions. They've so far successfully argued for an injunction against those cease-and-desist letters.
