Celtics Remain One Of The NBA’s Top Teams Since January

The Celtics cruised to another big win on Sunday as they beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 134-112. Jayson Tatum (34 points) and Jaylen Brown (31 points, 10 rebounds) scored 30-plus each while three others finished in double digits for Boston.

Boston owns the league’s best defense at 103.8 points allowed per game and that’s been the driving force behind its current success. The Celtics are allowing just 103.5 points over their six-game win streak with an average margin of victory of 21.7 points – talk about pure domination. The Celtics have not lost two consecutive games since January 21 – going 24-4 over that stretch – which is why they might be the hottest team in the NBA right now.

Al Horford (personal) and Robert Williams III (knee) are out while Tatum (rest) is questionable.

Raptors Also Finding Success With Steady Defense

The Raptors picked up a convincing 131-91 win over the Indiana Pacers their last time out on Saturday. It was a well-rounded offensive effort from Toronto as six players finished in double digits while Pascal Siakam topped the team with 23 points.

While the Raptors haven’t been quite as hot as the Celtics, they’ve also found success of late thanks to some great defensive basketball. Over their current 8-2 run, Toronto has surrendered just 105.8 points per game – not much more than Boston. The Raptors own the ninth-best defense in the NBA so far at 107.1 points against per game and that number seems to be falling as the season wears on.

Gary Trent Jr. (toe) is out for Monday’s matchup while Fred VanVleet (knee) is probable.

Celtics vs Raptors Pick & Insights

Celtics: Keys To Cover

Both Brown and Tatum have been on fire of late, averaging 28.4 and 31.6 points respectively over their last five outings. Although Tatum could be out for Monday’s contest, the Celtics should be able to pick up the slack defensively to make up for the absence of their leading scorer.

Raptors: Keys To Cover

Averaging just 109.1 points per game on offense this season, Toronto likely won’t be able to penetrate a fierce Boston defense. That said, the Raptors will likely want to turn this into a defensive chess match. The Celtics aren’t a great offensive team either, even with Tatum in the lineup. Without him, it’s possible that Toronto could keep Boston’s offense quiet and eke out a win.
