NBA Finals Game 5 Betting Preview: Cavs are Big Underdogs Again at Oracle
With their collective backs against the wall, the Cleveland Cavaliers avoided a sweep at the hands of the Golden State Warriors in a big way in Game 4 and will look to continue their long road back in the series when Game 5 gets underway tonight in Oakland. Sportsbooks opened the Dubs as 8.5-point home chalk with a total of 231.
Cleveland exposed the Warriors’ defense while setting records for first-quarter points (49) and halftime points (86) in an impressive 137-116 triumph. Everyone remembers Golden State blowing the 3-1 series lead in the Finals a year ago, but no NBA team has ever erased a 3-0 deficit.
Kyrie Irving continues to build his well-deserved reputation as a big-time player, as the point guard is averaging 39 points over the past two contests and 30.3 in the series. LeBron James has been his usual dominant self as well, averaging 31.8 points, 11.8 rebounds and 10.5 assists while posting his ninth career playoff triple-double in Game 4 to break a tie with Magic Johnson for most all-time.
Draymond Green, who was suspended for Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals after punching James in the groin, will be in the mix tonight and it could be the difference-maker. Green’s offense hasn’t been otherworldly of late but his presence on defense cannot be overstated.
If the Cavaliers want to make it 3-2, they’ll need to put forth a better effort than they did in the Sportsbook two tilts of the series. In Games 1 and 2, the wine and gold were outscored by a combined 40 points.
Unsurprisingly, the Warriors have been getting the job done when coming off a loss. In Golden State's last 15 contests after a loss, they're 12-3 SU.
