Los Angeles Lakers vs. Philadelphia 76ers Expert Picks
Los Angeles Lakers ATS -4.5 (-110), ML (-178)
When momentum starts to build, the injuries begin to seep through, and that's unfortunately been the prevailing tagline of a Sixers season that's fallen off the tracks and needs a ton of work and good fortune to get back on course. The team has won two in a row, but on top of already not having former league Most Valuable Player Joel Embiid as he recovers from a swollen knee, Philadelphia will now be without Paul George versus Los Angeles after the nine-time All-Star injured his left pinky finger during Saturday's 109-97 road win over the Chicago Bulls.
The 76ers are 3-11 this season when George is unavailable, and not having both him and Embiid thrusts even more offensive pressure on Tyrese Maxey against a Lakers team that's won four in a row and six of their last seven while scoring 117 points per 100 possessions (11th) during that span. Los Angeles is also 4-1 when competing on the second night of a back to back, having just defeated the Charlotte Hornets on Monday by a score of 112-107. Keep in mind, however, that this is its third game in four nights, and the possibility lingers of one or both of Anthony Davis and LeBron James being held out for rest, although that hasn't been confirmed as of Tuesday morning.
If they're both active, or even if just one of the superstars is in uniform, Philadelphia will struggle to keep pace and find consistent offense from anyone who doesn't have the name "Maxey" on the back of their jersey. Rui Hachimura has missed time for the Lakers with calf tightness and could be a game-time decision, and considering Los Angeles needed to run the Davis-James tandem over 35 minutes each just to beat Charlotte, added depth would be welcome even against the remnants of Philly.
Tuesday marks just the third time this season that the Lakers are favored by 4.5 or more points away from Crypto.com Arena, having gone 2-1 SU and 0-2-1 ATS. The push came against the Hornets, which is the only saving grace against the spread. With the assumption that some combination of Davis and James will play, wagering on Los Angeles to both win and cover makes more sense as the Sixers simply can't be trusted when down so many key bodies.
UNDER 217.5 Total Points (-108)
The Lakers will be fatigued at best, and we've gone over how Philadelphia just doesn't have the firepower when down two of its top guys.
Sometimes the most logical projection ends up being the correct one, so beyond even glancing over the OVER/UNDER records for both sides, the UNDER is the sensible play here especially if Los Angeles head coach JJ Redick sits some of his stars.
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Philadelphia 76ers Player Prop
Tyrese Maxey OVER 3.5 Made 3-Pointers (-102)
The Lakers rank 26th in the Association for opponent's 3-point percentage on the road at 37.7 while giving up 14.2 (21st) in the process. Maxey has attempted a staggering 46 3-pointers over his last four appearances, connecting on four or more on three occasions which would equate to an OVER on Tuesday.
He had five in a monster 44-point win over Los Angeles a season ago, and Philadelphia will lean heavily on him to keep the scoreboard close here, so there's a high probability of him taking double-digit attempts from the perimeter once again to help this prop along.
