Los Angeles News & Notes
The Lakers picked up a 121-116 win over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday thanks to a 30-point, 10-rebound performance from Anthony Davis. Russell Westbrook scored 26, added 10 assists and was just one board shy of a triple-double. LeBron James scored just 10 points in 21 minutes of action before he was ejected from the game following an altercation with Isaiah Stewart of the Pistons.
James, who received a one-game suspension for his actions on Sunday, will miss Monday’s contest. The Lakers should still be in good shape as Davis has been heating up with two consecutive games of 30-plus points under his belt.
New York News & Notes
The Knicks fell 109-103 to the Chicago Bulls on Sunday as DeMar DeRozan dropped 31 points. New York’s Julius Randle led all scorers with 34 points but didn’t get much help from his teammates as Alec Burks was the next highest scorer for the Knicks with just 13 points.
After an impressive 5-1 start to the season, New York has fallen off to 9-8, sitting just one game above .500. Randle leads the team with 20.4 points per game but hasn’t had a ton of offensive support around him.
Derrick Rose (ankle) is questionable for Tuesday and Mitchell Robinson (concussion) and Taj Gibson (groin) are out.
How Los Angeles Will Cover
The Lakers proved Sunday that they don’t necessarily need James to win games – especially when Davis and Westbrook both show up to play. Los Angeles hasn’t been hot but is coming up against a New York team that is low on confidence. Davis and Westbrook will be the best players on the floor and they’ve got to prove that Tuesday.
How New York Will Cover
The Knicks have been sluggish recently but they’ll be hoping to take advantage of a LeBron-less Lakers team. Randle put up 34 points on Sunday – his second-highest total of the season – and he’ll likely need to carry a lot of the offensive load if New York is going to come out with a win.
