San Antonio Spurs' Patty Mills of Australia plays against the Minnesota Timberwolves in an NBA basketball game Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, in Minneapolis.

Spurs' Defense Has Sprung a Major Leak Lately

The San Antonio Spurs have prided themselves on defense over the past two decades, but the 2018-19 edition of the Spurs has been anything but solid on the defensive end. San Antonio will attempt to limit the offensive damage at home against the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Sportsbooks opened the Spurs as 1-point home underdogs with a total of 216.

SHARK BITES
  • The OVER is 6-1 in the Trail Blazers' last seven games.
  • The OVER is 4-0 in the last four meetings between the Trail Blazers and Spurs.
  • The Trail Blazers are 0-6 ATS in their last six games.

Trail Blazers vs Spurs Game Center

What’s going on in San Antonio right now?

San Antonio fell 128-89 to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday and returned home to suffer a 136-105 defeat at the hands of the Houston Rockets. Gregg Popovich’s team has let the last two opponents combine to make 40 3-pointers in 95 attempts. The Spurs have allowed at least 135 points an NBA-high four times this season, two more than it did in Popovich’s first 22 years behind the bench.

The Trail Blazers shot 53.6 percent while defeating the Spurs 121-108 at home on October 20, which was a part of Portland’s 10-3 start. Since then, they’ve dropped six fo nine, including a 113-112 setback to Denver on Friday at Moda Center. CJ McCollum contributed 33 points against the Nuggets but missed a game-winning shot at the buzzer. Damian Lillard scored 29 points and handed out nine assists with zero turnovers in the first meeting between the clubs this year.

Bet the Blazers at your own risk

Portland has become a very poor spread bet lately, as they’ve failed to cover in six straight entering tonight’s game. The Trail Blazers are also 0-5 ATS in their past five tilts with Western Conference opponents and 1-5 ATS in their previous six road games.

When it comes to the total, the OVER looks like an appealing play in this one. The OVER is 6-0-1 in the Spurs’ past seven games, while six of the Trail Blazers’ past seven contests have eclipsed the closing total. The OVER is also 4-0 Portland’s last four away from home.

My pick: take the OVER

Much like the Grizzlies-76ers game, I think oddsmakers have tabbed this total a little too low. Both sides have proved themselves to be excellent OVER bets of late, as they’ve had no issues scoring but have been letting opponents do so as well. I think it’s going to be a high scoring affair in Texas, so take the OVER and run.
