Playing Mistake-Free Football Helps Bears Overcome Lack Of Firepower
If there’s a conclusion to draw from Matt Eberflus’ first game as Chicago’s head coach, it’s that the Bears should be a lot more disciplined this season. After finishing near the bottom of the NFL in turnover ratio last year, Chicago won the turnover battle 2-1 in its Week 1 upset of the 49ers, committing just three penalties in the process.
Despite playing such a clean game, the Bears were still held scoreless until midway through the third quarter, when Justin Fields hit Dante Pettis for a 51-yard TD pass on a broken play. Fields managed only 70 other yards through the air and Chicago finished the contest with just 15 first downs.
Still, it was a positive first step for a Bears team that is now 3-1 SU and ATS in its last four games dating back to last season. Chicago needs all the confidence it can get going into a game in prime time, where the Bears are 0-7 SU and 1-6 ATS in their last seven appearances.
Pack’s Lack Of Receiver Depth Apparent In Sportsbook Loss To Minnesota
The Packers offense couldn’t have played much worse in its season opener last week in Minnesota, beginning with the Sportsbook play. Rookie receiver Christian Watson dropped what looked like a sure touchdown pass on Green Bay’s first play from scrimmage, setting the tone in an ugly 23-7 loss.
Green Bay’s lack of depth at wide receiver was glaring following the offseason departure of Davante Adams and the absence of Allen Lazard (ankle). Running back A.J. Dillon led the team in both catches and receiving yards, with receivers Romeo Doubs, Watson, Sammy Watkins, Juwann Winfree and Randall Cobb combining for just 103 yards on 11 catches.
Perhaps playing on the national stage Sunday night will help spark Rodgers and the Packers attack. Green Bay is 6-0 SU and ATS in its last six Sunday Night Football contests, going OVER the total in each of them.
Bears: Keys To Win
In order to have a chance at the upset, Chicago needs to limit its turnovers once again to avoid giving Green Bay’s struggling offense any short fields to work with. The Bears also can’t afford to fall behind by multiple scores, since it’s hard to imagine Fields and Chicago’s anemic passing attack getting them back into the game.
Packers: Keys To Win
Green Bay actually ran the ball very effectively in Week 1 against Minnesota, when Aaron Jones and Dillon combined to gain 94 yards on 15 carries. As long as the Packers don’t find themselves in a big early hole like they did last week, they should be able to stay committed to the ground game and sustain some drives.
