Cowboys, Eagles Fight For First In NFC East On MNF
The Dallas Cowboys (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS) will host the Philadelphia Eagles (1-1, 1-1) in a key divisional matchup with first place on the line on Monday Night Football. The Cowboys are listed as small home favorites at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark following a 20-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers as 3-point road underdogs last Sunday. The Eagles fell 17-11 to the San Francisco 49ers as 3-point home dogs after upsetting the Atlanta Falcons as 3-point road dogs in the season opener.
Sportsbook Odds Analysis
Dallas has moved up slightly to -4 in early betting action, and the total has dropped a little down to 52 as well. In other words, not much movement so far for this important NFC East tilt. The most interesting betting angles on this game revolve around the fact that the Cowboys have lost seven straight prime-time games, according to the Odds Shark NFL Database, including their season-Sportsbook defeat at Tampa Bay to the defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has won four of five on MNF. Will that sway the betting public, though? It has not yet, but there is plenty of time for that to change.
Philadelphia News & Notes
The Eagles found it hard to score against one of the top defenses in the NFL a week ago, mustering just one fourth-quarter touchdown to go along with a first-quarter field goal that gave the team an early 3-0 lead.
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts completed just 12 of 23 passes for 190 yards vs San Francisco, a far cry from his 264-yard, three-touchdown performance at Atlanta in Week 1.
However, Hurts did enjoy some success on the ground again with 82 yards on 10 carries, including the lone score in the fourth on a one-yard run. He should find things a little easier here at Dallas and will need to continue to take advantage of opportunities with his legs as well as his arm.
Dallas News & Notes
The Cowboys could have easily fallen to 0-2 had it not been for a 56-yard game-winning field goal from kicker Greg Zuerlein, who was a perfect 2-for-2 on his FG attempts and 2-for-2 on PATs.
Zuerlein was 3-for-5 on FGs and 2-for-3 on PATs in the season opener, raising some concerns about whether he could do the job in 2021. Fortunately for Dallas, he redeemed himself, and the defense also did its part by picking off Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert twice and sacking him twice for 25 yards.
Dak Prescott was solid for the Cowboys under center with 237 yards on 23-of-27 passing, and the running game really stepped up with 198 rushing yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns. If Dallas can continue to run the ball like that, it will take pressure off Prescott to make plays.
Staff Betting Pick: UNDER 52
Both teams have shown they can score some points in the first two weeks of the season, but each has shown a tendency to struggle offensively at times too. In this particular divisional matchup, the total just seems a bit high, as you have to go all the way back to 2015 to find a number that closed higher than 50.5 in a meeting between these two. The result of that game was 20-10 in favor of the Cowboys, and this may be a similar low-scoring affair where the kickers play a bigger role than fans and bettors expect.
