The New England Patriots entered Super Bowl XXXIX at Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida looking for their second straight Super Bowl title and their third Super Bowl title in four years. New England was a 7-point favorite going up against the Philadelphia Eagles.
For the second straight season, the New England Patriots rolled through the regular season with a 14-2 SU record. The acquisition of running back Corey Dillon paid huge dividends for the Patriots as the veteran back enjoyed a career year in New England. Rushing for a franchise-record 1,635 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, Dillon added another dimension to the offense to go along with Tom Brady's effective passing attack. The offense finished the season seventh in yards gained and fourth in points scored. Defensively, the team was plagued with injuries but still had a solid core led by Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi.
After advancing to the NFC Championship Game and falling short of a Super Bowl berth in each of the previous three seasons, the Philadelphia Eagles finally got the job done and advanced to Super Bowl XXXIX. The offseason acquisition of wideout Terrell Owens worked out well for the Eagles as the receiver had 77 catches for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns as the team's primary deep threat. Donovan McNabb had a career year passing for 3,875 yards and 31 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. The defense was strong as well with all four of its starters in the secondary named to the Pro Bowl. The Eagles were 13-3 SU during the regular season.
This was a highly-competitive Super Bowl from start to finish. The teams were tied up at the end of the first three quarters at 0-0 at the end of the first quarter, 7-7 at halftime and 14-14 at the end of the third quarter. But in the fourth quarter, the Patriots took a 10-point lead and held on for a 24-21 win.
It was the third straight Super Bowl that New England had won by three points and the second straight that they won but failed to cover the spread. The total of 45 stayed just UNDER the posted total of 46.5.
