Caps Go for Fourth-Straight Win Monday
The Washington Capitals have been the NHL’s top team since the Sportsbook night of the season and can further extend their lead atop the Eastern Conference and tighten their grip on the President’s Trophy with a win versus the Arizona Coyotes Monday.
The Caps, sitting on 90 points through 57 games, take a three-game winning streak into Monday’s game while the Coyotes have lost seven of 10 and head into the meeting off a 6-4 loss to the St. Louis Blues Saturday.
Monday’s visit to D.C. starts a five-game road trip for the Coyotes, who sit seven points back of the San Jose Sharks for third in the Pacific Division. They had played well prior to the loss, winning 6-2 and 6-3 over the Montreal Canadiens and Dallas Stars respectively.
The Capitals have been a machine this season, ranking in the top five in goals per game, goals against, power play percentage and penalty kill percentage. Alex Ovechkin has been in vintage form in February, tallying 10 goals and 11 points in nine games during the month. Ovi recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday’s 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils in the Caps’ last effort.
While the Yotes can certainly fill the net (ninth in the NHL with 2.8 goals per game), they are undisciplined in too many areas to compete with the incredibly-polished Caps.
