2024-25 Vezina Trophy Odds: Two Eastern Conference Goalies Share Favorite Status

The 2024-25 Vezina Trophy odds aren't favoring any one goalie in the NHL. Boston's Jeremy Swayman and New York's Igor Shesterkin sit at the top of the board with +600 odds.

While both are worthy candidates, there is excellent value elsewhere on the board, specifically with two Metropolitan Division goaltenders.

2024-25 Vezina Trophy Odds Favorites

Two players lead our Vezina Trophy odds board so let's look at both goalies to see their chances of claiming the top goalie award in 2024-25.

Jeremy Swayman (Boston Bruins)

Any Vezina winner needs two things: (1) to be in the top five for wins and (2) to have elite numbers (save percentage and goals against average).

Swayman is still young, but we've seen his quality in a split crease. The Alaskan has never posted a save percentage below 0.914 or a goals-against average higher than 2.41. His career average is 0.919SV% and a 2.34GAA. Those are Vezina winning numbers.

We know Swayman owns the Bruins crease this year. Linus Ullmark was traded to the Ottawa Senators and with all due respect to Joonas Korpisalo the former Columbus, Ottawa and LA keeper, Swayman will start 50+ games this year.

This Boston Bruins squad has put up no less than 100 points per season since 2017-18. And these Bruins have been one of the best defensive teams in the league for a while. They've posted a goals-against per game below 2.40 three times since that 17-18 season.

Swayman's set up well to be the top goalie in the NHL.

Igor Shesterkin (New York Rangers)

Just like Swayman, Shesterkin owns the crease for the New York Rangers. He's also got incredible career numbers with an average 2.43GAA and 0.921SV%. Not to mention he's a Vezina winner from 2021-22.

But unlike the Bruins, Shesterkin doesn't play for a defensive powerhouse. The Rangers haven't posted a goals against per game lower than 2.40 since 2014-15. Shesterkin's also seen the sixth-most shots against since joining the league. There's no doubt the Rangers are a good team, but they don't make it easy on Shesterkin.

With that type of "defense" in front of him I'm not convinced Shesterkin can put it together to win a Vezina.

2024-25 Vezina Trophy Odds Value Picks

As promised, here are my two value picks from the Metropolitan Division.

Jacob Markstrom (New Jersey Devils)

The Devils needed a starting goalie and felt like they got it with Jacob Markstrom. The 34-year-old had a poor year with a 0.905SV% and a 2.78GA, but he finished runner-up for the Vezina three seasons ago with a 2.22GAA and 0.922SV% (don't forget those nine shutouts). That's the Marktrom the Devils hope to get.

He's their number-one keeper in New Jersey. He'll get enough starts and if he's still got the goods, he'll have the stats to win the Vezina.

Ilya Sorokin (New York Islanders)

The Islanders keeper has only played three full seasons in the NHL. In two of those seasons, he's finished sixth and second in Vezina Trophy voting. This past season was the only year he didn't get Vezina consideration. Rightfully so Sorokin averaged a 3.01GAA and 0.908SV%. He was also awful in the playoffs.

Can he bounce back? Yeah of course. The Islanders hired his previous goalie coach Sergei Naumovs from Russia. And while I know he's technically coaching the Isles AHL goalies, Naumovs is still within the organization with access to all their video and data. Oh, and Sorokin's head coach is none other than Patrick Roy. He's got enough help around him to get back to his best.

By winning the Vezina in 2024, Connor Hellebuyck became the first repeat winner in seven years. Bucky has not only won the top goalie award twice but has finished top four in voting another three times since 2017-18.

Who Has Won The Most Vezina Trophies?

Hasek is the clear winner here, going on an insane ratio of six Vezina trophies in seven years – it’s pretty incredible to be placed ahead of titans of the net like Brodeur and Roy, who round out our multi-winner list with four and three wins.

Dominik Hasek contributes heavily to the Sabres, adding six Vezina awards to their total of eight. Following them, the Bruins and Canadiens boast five wins thanks to stars like Tim Thomas and Patrick Roy respectively.

NHL Teams that have never had a player win the Vezina Trophy

Keeping in mind that we’re using Vezina standings from 81 and onward, that really isn’t enough time for every team to get a piece of the trophy. With some incredible prospects in the pipeline, there are a few teams on this list who should break through to the trophy case sooner than later.

Vezina Trophy Betting Trends

There's always going to be a handful of goalies that leave Vezina bettors sweating til' the last game of the regular season -- it's truly one of the closest awards in the league thanks to how much improvement we see from the elite netminders across the league. Here are some trends that might help you place a bet, or identify who to stay clear of:

  • Back-to-back winners have been uncommon in recent years, with Martin Brodeur being the last to take home consecutive awards in 2007 and 2008.
  • There might be a bit of a postseason curse – no Vezina winner has gone on to claim the Stanley Cup in over ten years.
  • 7/10 of the last winners are Eastern Conference players, making it a trending conference for Vezina candidates.
  • Look for a goalie that's going to start 50+ games on a good team. You need a goalie that's going to rack up a lot of wins.
