The 2024-25 Norris Trophy Odds have made Cale Makar the clear favorite at +250. Four other defensemen are behind Makar with +800 odds.
Edmonton's Evan Bouchard is one of those defensemen with +800 odds. To me, Bouchard could easily win the NHL's top defenseman trophy in 2024-25.

2024-25 Norris Trophy Odds Favorites
Cale Makar
Colorado's Cale Makar has finished in the top three for Norris voting for four years straight. It's a no-brainer to have him at the top of the 2024-25 Norris trophy odds board.
Remember, rightly or wrongly, this award is handed out to the highest-scoring defenseman, and that's Cale Makar. Over the past three seasons, Makar has ranked first or second in points per game and first for goals for all defensemen.
The expectation from fans and oddsmakers is for Makar to continue dominating the defensive stats sheet. Sportsbooks have set his regular-season points total at 88.5 points. The Avs star D-man will continue racking up the points in 24-25 and should be contending for another Norris Trophy.
2024-25 Norris Trophy Odds Value Picks
With Cale Makar the easy favorite, we've got a ton of value elsewhere on the board that we can exploit.
Evan Bouchard
If you're looking for a scoring defenseman, look no further than Evan Bouchard. The Oilers blueliner scored 82 points in 81 games last season. He backed that up with 32 points in 25 playoff games.
That uptick in scoring coincided with an uptick in ice time. Bouchard played an average of 23 minutes in 23-24, up from 18:31 the year prior. The Oilers will continue to put him out for big minutes next year where he'll undoubtedly shadow Hart Trophy favorite Connor McDavid.
Bouch will score a bunch this season, he'll be one of the favs for this award next year.
Roman Josi
Barry Trotz had a hell of an offseason with the acquisition of Steven Stamkos, Brady Skeji and Jonathan Marchessault. That's a few more tools for Josi.
The Swiss defender still managed to score an incredible 23 goals and 85 points last year and finished second on the Norris ballot.
I get that Josi is 34 now, but he didn't look it when he averaged a ridiculous 24:38 of ice time last year. With a few more offensive weapons to play with, there's no doubt Josi scores enough to challenge for his second Norris Trophy.
previous 10 Norris Trophy Winners
Year | Player | Team |
---|---|---|
2024 | Quinn Hughes | Vancouver Canucks |
2023 | Erik Karlsson | San Jose Sharks |
2022 | Cale Makar | Colorado Avalanche |
2021 | Adam Fox | New York Rangers |
2020 | Roman Josi | Nashville Predators |
2019 | Mark Giordano | Calgary Flames |
2018 | Victor Hedman | Tampa Bay Lightning |
2017 | Brent Burns | San Jose Sharks |
2016 | Drew Doughty | Los Angeles Kings |
2015 | Erik Karlsson | Ottawa Senators |
Karlsson’s monster 101-point season got him his third Norris Trophy. Veterans on the list like Josi, Burns and Giordano have started to make way for younger stars in Fox and Makar, but age is no barrier for a good defender – even the older blueliners have shown they’re not going down without a fight.

*Won Norris every year between 1969 and 1975
No one was as dominant as Bobby Orr. The Bruins' blue line won seven consecutive Norris Trophies from 1969 to 1975. Niklas Lidstrom was nearly as supreme with seven total top defensemen awards though not in consecutive order like Orr.

The Bruins have always had a tough reputation, so it's only fitting for their rosters to include the most Norris Trophy winners in NHL history. Their victories were contributed by only three players, with Bobby Orr being the most famous victor for the Bruins.
Four other Original Six teams, all except Toronto, back them up with impressive wins of their own – it pays to have been around the league for a while.
NHL Teams that have never had a player win the Art Norris Trophy
For an award that's been around since 1954, it's surprising to see 13 teams remain winless in the Norris category. Vancouver was the latest team to come off the list after Quinn Hughes was named the league's top defenseman in 2024.
But the Norris Trophy is very repeatable, and we've been lucky enough to have some great minds cross the blue line in NHL history -- there's always next year.
Norris Trophy Betting Trends
Like the Vezina Trophy, it's a little easier to choose a Norris winner thanks to a smaller pool of potential winners. We've seen point-scoring defensemen steal the show for this award, so it's possible to get even more granular by looking for the D-Men contributing heavily to their team's offense. Here are a few other examples of Norris betting trends over the years:
