Blackhawks Go for 10th-Straight in Toronto
The sputtering Toronto Maple Leafs are the next team up to try to end the Chicago Blackhawks’ winning streak as the two Original Six teams meet up at the Air Canada Centre Friday evening.
The Blackhawks extended their winning streak to nine games with a 2-1 win at the Montreal Canadiens Thursday evening. Hawks netminder Corey Crawford stopped 39 shots en route to his 25th victory of the season and has now improved his record to 6-0 with a 1.49 goals against average and a whopping .957 save percentage in six January starts.
Also of note from the win in La Belle Province, head coach Joel Quenneville notched win number 783, moving him ahead of Al Arbour to second on the all-time list.
After beginning the month so promising with a pair of wins, the Leafs have lost three in a row heading into Friday’s contest. In their last game, the Buds lost to the Columbus Blue Jackets and have now been outscored 12-2 in those three defeats.
While the Blackhawks’ goaltender situation is unclear at the time of writing, James Reimer has been confirmed as the starter for the Leafs, according to James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail. The 27-year-old has been far and away Toronto’s best option in the crease but has been snake bitten by a lack of scoring support from the guys in front of him. Reimer boasts a 1.98 GAA and .936 save percentage - sparkling numbers - but has just seven wins in 19 appearances (17 starts) this season.
If the Leafs hope to end their own personal skid, giving Reimer some help on the offensive end would be a plus. But with the way the Hawks are playing on both ends of the ice lately, not to mention the fact that the Hawks are 9-2 straight up against the Leafs in the previous 11 meetings, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
