Oilers' Pace has Slowed Since Blistering Start
Edmonton will make the quick turnaround after their thriller against the Islanders last night as they travel to Hockeytown to take on the overachieving Detroit Red Wings. The Oilers remain level with the Blackhawks at the top of the Western Conference despite dropping three of their last four games.
Cam Talbot is the only goalie in the NHL that has started every game so far and he’s posted more than respectable numbers with a .925 save percentage and 2.36 goals against average. With the Oilers on the second-half of a back-to-back, however, it’s unlikely they ask their No. 1 to make his 12th start of the season. If that’s the case, look for Jonas Gustavsson (.908 SV% in 2015-16) between the pipes for Edmonton.
Jimmy Howard will get the start at the other end of the ice and this game could be his undoing. Howard has been posting stats well beyond what he’s now capable of and the Oilers’ high-pressure offense should be able to solve the 32-year-old netminder who has not earned a season save percentage better than .910 since the 2012-13 season.
I like the OVER in this one no matter what the closing number is.
