Carolina Hurricanes | -140 |
New York Rangers | +120 |
Odds as of May 1
Two of the league's top three teams, including this seasons best meet. What a treat.
Standing on their President's Trophy, oddsmakers must believe the Rangers had it easier in the opening round, sweeping the Capitals pretty easily. Carolina didn't strain themselves either, sending the Islanders packing in five games.
Notably, the Rangers have never entered as the favorites when meeting the Hurricanes in the postseason. When they last met in 2022, the Rangers also entered the Conference Semi-Finals at +170 underdogs. But, as we know, New York came out on top.

Under a regular playoff format, which they've only played once, these two like to go the distance. The previous series went a full seven games until the Rangers finished the job in the final game.
In 2022, each picked up their first three games at their home arenas. Eventually, it was Carolina that broke the home-ice streak at Raleigh in Game 7.
The first postseason meeting between the clubs was in 2020 during the COVID-19 Qualifiers best-of-five format. In that year, it was Carolina, entering as -140 favorites, that won in three-straight.

November 2nd, 2023 | NY Rangers (-115) | Carolina (-105) | 2-1 Rangers | 5.5 (U) |
The Rangers won two of three meetings against the Hurricanes this season, including the most recent meeting in March and the only game held in Raleigh.
Despite both sitting in the league's top 10 for offense, two outings went extremely UNDER the point total. Their defenses, which also rank in the top 10, are definitely responsible.
Notable Player Performances
Igor Shesterkin: A strong regular season carrying the tenth-best .913SV% carried over into the playoffs. In all but one outing, the 28-year-old recorded a .920SV% or more. He allowed just five goals throughout the entire series.

Frederik Andersen: Gotta give it to Andersen, he showed up when his team needed him. Whenever he faced 30 or more shots in the first round, the 34-year-old always wrapped up with a .914SV% or higher.
Andrei Svechnikov: The 24-year-old was pretty relentless to kick off the playoff run, snapping 15 shots against the Islanders. In the two games he didn't shoot, he pocketed two assists in each instead. No matter what, he was involved.

Carolina has met New York in the playoffs twice, including a COVID-19 Qualifiers round, with both winning a series each.
In their first true format meeting, the series went to seven games. Notably, the Rangers and Hurricanes won their first three games at home in 2022. That year, the Rangers also entered as +140 underdogs to win the series.
Though the last two postseason outings hit the OVER, it's tough to ignore the whopping eight-game streak of the UNDER that came before.
Carolina vs. NY Rangers playoff series expert pick: Hurricanes 4-3 (+500)
There's a clear discrepancy between these two at even strength so far in these playoffs. Carolina has an 11.64 expected goals for at 5-on-5, the third-best mark. However, New York falls flat with just 5.52, the worst of all teams in the playoffs.
We know New York capitalizes with an extra-man, where they had a 27.10PP% during the regular season (ranked third). Of the Rangers 15 total goals from last series, 40% were scored while on the powerplay. However, we saw the Canes kill 73% of the Isles powerplay chances.
If this truly comes down to 5-on-5 performances, Carolina has the upperhand.
