Canadiens Big Favorites Today Despite Struggles on the Road
Among other things, Martin Luther King Jr. Day means Monday afternoon hockey games and it’s actually a pretty decent slate. The Red Wings will host the Canadiens in the second wave of games today with both teams dealing with their fair share of injuries. Carey Price and Montreal are undefeated in two games against the Wings this season, including a 5-0 shutout back in November. The Habs will be a significant road favorite tonight and with their .500 record away from the Bell Centre, it could be a good game to extract some value.
With two days since their last game, the Canadiens’ No. 1 goaltender is in line for the start today and for once in his illustrious career, that probably doesn’t intimidate his opponent. Price (21-7-4, 2.34 GAA, .921 SV %) is in a serious slump that’s seen his goals-against average balloon and his save percentage take a nosedive. In 11 starts on the road this year, he owns just a .905 save marker and a pretty ugly 2.77 goals-against average.
The problem for the Wings, however, is that it rarely matters how many they pop on an opposing goaltender – they usually have more popped on their own. Detroit is near the bottom of the league with a team save percentage of .903 and has been allowing an average of 30.56 five-on-five shots per 60 minutes.
Although they're coming off a 6-3 beatdown of the Pens at the Joe Louis, the Wings have been horrible at following up wins. They haven’t earned back-to-back victories since early December and will be in trouble against the Habs this afternoon.
