Battle at the Bottom as Oilers Host Leafs
The post-Dion Phaneuf era started with a 4-3 loss at the Calgary Flames Tuesday night, but the Toronto Maple Leafs get another shot at victory in Alberta when they visit Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers Thursday night.
A look across the NHL standings shows that Canadian clubs haven’t fared so well this season and the Leafs and Oilers are the worst of the lot. Both teams have a league-worst 47 points with the Leafs in the basement of the Atlantic Division and the Oilers in the cellar of the Pacific.
The Oilers, who are currently -135 in moneyline markets at online shop Sportsbook, head into the contest on a three-game losing skid but were a lock for OVER bettors prior to a 2-1 loss at the New Jersey Devils in their last game. The OVER had gone 6-1-1 in eight games prior to that game in New Jersey with an average of seven goals being scored per game over that stretch.
The Leafs enjoyed a modest two-game winning streak immediately after the All-Star break, but followed that up with a 6-1 loss at the Ottawa Senators and then the loss at Calgary. The Buds have now lost 11 of their last 14 games, but did record a 3-0 victory over the Oilers when they visited the Air Canada Centre back in November.
It’s tough to cap a contest featuring two teams toiling at the bottom of the league and seemingly content competing in a race for the No. 1 draft pick, but with two of the poorest defenses in the league on display Thursday night, there could be value for OVER bettors.
