Leafs are on a Puckline Win Streak Against the Western Conference
The Leafs and Jets will meet for the first time this season in one of just two games on the NHL docket tonight. Both teams sit near the bottom of their respective divisions through the first couple of games of the campaign and for the Leafs, this is the start of a three-game road trip – and it’s probably the most winnable matchup.
Frederik Andersen will get the start for Toronto looking to improve on his .891 save percentage through his first two regular season starts with his new club. The Dane has allowed six total goals so far but looked much better in his last game against the Bruins in which he stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced. Andersen will steal a few games for the Maple Buds this year and that’s a definite possibility tonight.
The Jets have gotten starts from both Connor Hellebuyck and Michael Hutchinson this year but the results have been the same no matter who’s started in the Winnipeg net. They’ve allowed exactly four goals in all three of their games so far and could have a tough time keeping a Leafs team that has averaged 4.5 goals per game off the scoresheet.
Paul Maurice has not confirmed his starter for tonight but Hellebuyck is the most likely candidate as he is in line to get the No. 1 gig if he proves he can handle the workload. The Commerce, Missouri native posted a .918 save percentage in 26 appearances last year and was emerging as a dominant force before he suffered an injury near the end of the 2015-16 season.
