I thought the US had the better team coming into the tournament, and so far they've proven me right leading a tough Group A with seven points and a +9 goal differential. The US might even be a perfect 3-0 if Danny Nelson had scored his point-blank one-timer in overtime against the Finns.
The USA has better forwards who've doubled Canada's offensive output with 18 goals to Canada's nine, their top line of James Hagens, Gabe Perreault, and captain Ryan Leonard have been dominant scoring five goals, nearly as many as the entire Canadian team. Hagens is tied for second in the tournament scoring six points through three games.
Canada has struggled offensively in this tournament only scoring nine goals across three games. A big reason for their loss to Latvia was that poor offense that only scored two goals on 57 shots, an abysmal 4% shooting percentage. They've also lost standout defenseman Matthew Schaffer for the entire tournament who scored two points (including a valuable goal) in the two games he played.
The Canadians' only bright spot is goalie Carter George who has yet to allow a goal in 120 minutes of tournament play, but his OHL stats are anything but good at a 6.49 goals against average and 0.905 save percentage. He's going to have a wake-up call against those skilled American forwards and with Canada's lack of offensive punch I don't trust the hosts to come away with a win.
