2025 Opening Day Betting Handles

2025 MLB Opening Day Betting Handles: Bettors Love Phillies, Paul Skenes

Baseball is so back, and bettors are locked in for 2025 Opening Day.

With help from BetMGM's betting data, we've got access to the most wagered teams and player props ahead of the season openers. Bettors love the Phillies (-155) and Yankees (-145). Naturally, they're all over Pirates Opening Day starter Paul Skenes' props, too.

Below, I'll highlight where the betting action is for 2025 Opening Day:

2025 MLB Opening Day: Most Bet Teams

Most Bet Teams (Total Bets)

  • Yankees -145
  • Tigers +140
  • Red Sox -120
  • Mets +110
  • Phillies -155

Most Bet Teams (Money Wagered)

  • Phillies -155
  • Yankees -145
  • Red Sox -120
  • Blue Jays -115
  • Dodgers -170

The Phillies were the most bet squad in terms of money wagered, but they actually fell from -165 favorites to -155 since lines opened. That's some weird reverse line movement, but it's likely because there's a real respected bettor on the Nationals, part of just the 12% of all money on Washington today.

Most Bet Player Props For Opening Day

Pitching Props

  • Paul Skenes - OVER 6.5 Ks -175
  • Luis Severino - UNDER 5.5 Ks -150
  • Yusei Kikuchi - UNDER 6.5 Strikeouts -140

Paul Skenes strikeout OVERs are becoming a weekly tradition. The Pirates ace hit OVER 6.5 Ks in 16 of his 23 starts last year. He does face a brutal Marlins lineup today, so I get why bettors love his Ks OVER. But Skenes is not full stretch out yet, failing to pitch more than 4.2 innings or 85 pitches in a spring game. There's a chance he only lasts five innings today, so we'll need those Ks to come quick.

Home Run Props

  • Tyler O'Neill +400
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. +500
  • Shohei Ohtani +450

Tyler O'Neill against José Berríos is the most-bet homer prop? This one makes no sense to me. It's even weirder when you realize that O'Neill is just two-for-eight lifetime against Berríos and has never hit a homer off Toronto's Opening Day starter. O'Neill had just one homer in 12 spring games, too.

The popularity of a Vlad bet makes a lot more sense, as he's seven-for-19 against Eflin with a 1.105 OPS against the Orioles hurler.

No Run First Inning Props

  • Pittsburgh Pirates at Miami Marlins -190
  • Milwaukee Brewers at New York Yankees -135
  • Athletics at Seattle Mariners -150

Sandy Alcantara vs Paul Skenes is an OBVIOUS no run first inning bet, but you got to pay the price for it at -190. Skenes went 14-5 NRFI last year, with a 1.96 ERA in first innings. Alcantara goes for the Marlins (after missing all of last year) and pitched to a 0.00 ERA in five spring outings.
