Why Do The Boston Celtics Have The Highest Projected Win Total?

Beyond the obvious rationale of having just captured the 2024 championship, the Boston Celtics won a league-best 64 games this past season and lost just three games all postseason before hoisting the Larry O'Brien trophy. They've also seen their win total jump from 36 (shortened 2020-21 campaign) to 51 to 57 and just recently 64, so the progression has been noticeable and vast.

Boston would need 59 victories to hit the OVER on their early total, but its only managed to win at least that once since 2010. Working in its favor, though, is that two of the three most recent champions prior to the Celtics won four or more games the season after winning the title. That's still a lot to expect from a franchise that won as much as it did, is sending three starters to Paris, France for the 2024 Olympic Games, and will be without Kristaps Porzingis for what could be the remainder of the calendar year.

NBA Win Total To Monitor: Detroit Pistons OVER 25.5 (-110)

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong for the Detroit Pistons during their 14-68 campaign. They tied the record for the longest-ever losing streak at 28 games, and set a franchise record for futility with a winning percentage of .171.

With that being said, the team has made some offseason adjustments by adding Tobias Harris, Paul Reed, and Malik Beasley to work under new head coach J.B. Bickerstaff, and the young core of Cade Cunningham, Jalen Duren, and Jaden Ivey should only improve. Detroit hasn't won at least 26 games since 2019, but this is undoubtedly the best roster its possessed during this stretch which provides some level of confidence and optimism.

NBA Win Total Best Bet: Los Angeles Lakers UNDER 43.5 (+110)

There's going to be a learning curve for JJ Redick during his first year on the sidelines in any regard, no matter how much of a basketball savant some believe him to be. Even with his preexisting relationship with superstar LeBron James, who's also turning 40 years old in December, controlling the personalities on the roster may prove to be difficult for Redick out of the gate. It's also hard to imagine Anthony Davis suiting up for 76 games again based on his track record.

The front office did little outside of drafting Dalton Knecht to improve the team's standing, and the Los Angeles Lakers were already a middle-of-the-pack squad in a Western Conference death march that got more dangerous this summer. There's little reason to believe this franchise took any positive steps forward, and that should result in fewer wins.

How To Understand NBA Win Totals

When you check out a basketball betting site, you’ll see odds for team win totals displayed like this:

  • Boston Celtics O/U 58.5
  • OVER 58.5 +100
  • UNDER 58.5  -122

The number beside the team name is its projected regular-season win total. In this case, it’s 58.5 for the Boston Celtics. If you think Boston is going to win 59 or more games, you would take the OVER at +100.

A $100 bet would give you a payout of $200 – you get your $100 back along with your winnings of $100. Conversely, if you think they’re going to win 58 or fewer games, you’d take the UNDER at -122. That same $100 would give $181.97 – your original money returns, coupled with your prize of $81.97.

Our Odds Calculator will show you what you’d get on a winning bet based on the odds and amount wagered.

What Is A Prop Bet On NBA Win Totals Odds?

Although this may look like a totals bet because of the OVER/UNDER aspect, this is actually a prop bet because you’re technically wagering on the occurrence or non-occurrence of a specific player or team milestone. In this case, the marker is the total number of wins being more or less than the oddsmaker’s set number.

To get the best value on your NBA prop bets, take odds you like as soon as you see them. When oddsmakers set the lines, they could change as the season progresses and more games are played.
